College students unfriendly?
Is it just me (18 M), or is it difficult to talk to strangers on college campuses? I often have good conversations with older people, but I find it very difficult to have good conversations with my peers if we dont have a mutual acquaintance. If a stranger doesnt seem outright offended by my greeting them (this is often the case), then they usually reply in short sentences (if not sentence fragments) and do not try to continue the conversation by asking me questions or making topical remarks. It seems to me that the overwhelming majority of people have no interest in engaging with strangers outside of their preexisting social circles. Perhaps I am jumping to conclusions, but I even observe this phenomenon in my classes; very few of my classmates talk to each other if they are not already acquainted.
This might be because I go to a large competitive school, so many students focus entirely on academics rather than socializing.
