Ok, so I started out thinking that I was going to have to compile this into a pastebin at some point... seems like I mostly just wrote it here and now, minus some needed polishing and research. So, here in 3 parts, Helion's rough advice for new people:

1)Start out with something that you want to do. If you don't know what that is, read through requests in either this thread or the last one and find one you like. These days, we do have quite a diverse range of requests including poetry, sfw scripts, improvs, and nsfw scripts so you should be able to find something of interest to you. If that's a no go, just find yourself a favourite poem or piece of prose and read that, or if all else fails, just fap while the recording is running.

2)Question rambles are both in demand, and are actually a really good way of getting started. Yeah, I know, recording answers to the questions for new boys can seem a little pretentious when you have no idea if you're going to be staying around, but question rambles are probably the easiest things ever to record, just imagine that a nice girl (or guy) has wandered up to you and after a bit of pleasant chatting, has started asking you questions. You'll be rambling in no time.

3)Relax and have fun. Speaking generally, but especially if you're just starting out with this, if you're uncomfortable with what you're doing or are otherwise just forcing yourself through a recording, the results will not be as good as they could be otherwise.

4)If you're doing something written by someone else, don't expect to nail it on the first try. My suggestion will always be to read through a script/poem once in your head, once out loud and once for the recording. If you fuck up, you can either worry about it (and try again/go back to the last silence you can hide the cut in and start again from there) or just carry on. Most people are unlikely to quibble over a stumbled word here or there so you shouldn't either. Either way however, I would advise posting when *you* feel like it was a decent recording (listening back to it in full is entirely optional - I almost never do because I can't stand the sound of my own voice most of the time)

5)Recording with a smartphone is super easy, just about any free sound recorder app will do the trick. What you'll need to be careful of is what you do with that mic while you're recording (putting the phone on a desk, or holding it in your hand or laying on your chest, what orientation relative to your mouth, etc. - See point 6 for general guidance) and very deliberately not plugging it into it's charger.

6)Mic positioning is key when you don't have a super shiny mic. My advice for getting it super right? Experiment with different ways of holding the mic using the old 'testing one two, one two, one two' line ('nothing' and 'three' are also significant words for headset wearers) and listening back to the produced recording. Do this a few times until you're content with the resulting sound quality (and never forget, the voice on the recording will always sound different to the voice inside your head - there being a difference there is NOT a recording problem, it's a biology problem and one we all have).

7)If you're getting a lot of fuzz, you'll probably need to deal with some environmental noise factors (fans, laptop or other power supplies), but as long as you've got a decent signal-to-noise ratio, MidnightRambler's noise reduction guide at the top will help you. However, off the top of my head I'd say anything less than 10:1 and you're better off not putting it through post-processing because you'll be getting also sorts of horrible artifacts but that's mostly guess work at this point. If in doubt, listen to the recording and if you can hear all the words clearly, no editing is required.

Part 4 of 3 (yeah I misjudged it)

8)Thumping sounds generally mean the mic is directly in an air jet from your mouth, and that air pressure is thumping on the diagram of the mic. The hard 't' sound at the front of 'testing' and 'two' will especially test mics that are placed in front of the mouth. Meanwhile, this is also why I say that 'nothing' and 'three' are important for headset users to test: the 'th' sound in those words produce diffuse and often side firing jets out of your mouth and the most obvious (and often best) place to put a headworn mic other than directly in front of your face is to the side. Also, all mic types should be aware of air flows out of your nostrils... you'd be surprised at how much those things can fuck up a recording if you're not careful.

9)I'd recommend starting out with using vocaroo as host for your files because you don't have to set up any account, but if you're sticking around, I would very highly recommend using soundgasm, though clyp is slightly shinier.

And finally, as said above: HAVE FUN. If you're enjoying yourself, chances are that the listeners will be too.

I like rambles because it tells more about the performer, makes them more human than these idols that we look up to and hope to be noticed by when we make our requests. I love hearing people talk, and them talking about something they're passionate about makes it all better. Hearing someones passion and commitment to a subject can be one of the most captivating things.
It doesn't have to be a speech though, it can be just listening to your day and just being able to hear someone talk about their feelings and views on things. That's more comforting than anything. Listening to someone talk about maybe the new cafe down the road or how they find clouds pretty almost makes you feel like a friend in a weird way.

Sorry, but I'm not sure if I ever make any of those. I didn't have many friends to chat about casual things before. So I just stay silent. Most of the time. I do enjoy recording scripts and poetry. And I enjoy it a lot. Can't explain properly. Passion probably. But aside that, I usually have a hard chatting with new people. So I just don't feel comfortable about making rambles.

I don't think you should consider performers here as an idols that you look up to. We're all people here. People with different tastes and opinions on things. Some post post frequently and some rarely post anything. It's okay to be ignored tho. I learned that the hard way. Sometimes you just can't and won't fit into the group. Or people will think that you're a freak/retard/pervert/troll etc. and just ditch you. It's ok tho. Sometimes it's better to be alone. Sometimes it's better to stay quiet and not join a conversation. Especially when you have nothing to say.

I saw a post about the new Saw coming out, and what new kind of trap could be invented. Someone mentionned a russian soldier captured during WW2 who was told to play piano or be shot. He played for 22h straight, until he finally couldn't anymore and broke down crying. The germans congratulated him. Then shot him.
On that very happy note, someone mentionned talking non stop for a full hour. I tried, allowing myself 1.5s max (to breath, swallow, ...), and i managed to keep it up for a little over 38min, but man is it hard. So here we go with a strange request, try to go and talk as long as possible without ever stopping more than 1-2s. It doesn't have to make sense, you don't even have to post it, just try it to see for how long you can do it.

Okaaay... so I'm posting this in both the FSA and MSA side of things because of the nature of it.

Short version:

Werewolf bangs the fuck out of a cute girl and erm, only one of them walks away from that encounter. It doesn't end quite how you might expect.

The issue of why this's a bit... awkward shall we say... is that I voiced both sides of this and wrote the script. So yeah, a bit odd.

So yeah, uhm, to explain that a bit more clearly, I'm transgendered, normally I stick to a female voice, and normally you can't tell that I'm anything but pure female. Buuut... in this case I decided to do both sides of the coin. Can't say I feel too comfortable doing a male voice and haven't used one in years so it's kinda awkward for me, but apparently I can still pull it off if I try.

Yay, thanks muchly! Yeah, most of my stuff honestly isn't for everyone. I mostly aim to appeal to niche target groups which don't get much love otherwise. There's plenty of more "normal" stuff to go around, so I mostly stick to the things that I like because... well, there's very little of it, and if I'm starved to find more weird stuff, then it tends to mean other people probably are lacking as well.

This's probably one of the most tame ones I've done though, since well... the voice thing and the snuff part were kiiiinda both pretty major things already, so I didn't want to go overboard on the severity of kinks this time. =P

A looooot of practice. And training. And uhm, yeah... it's taken quite awhile to get to the point of being able to do such consistently.

How to put this... well, I started with studying animation - we learned very early on that what we think is reality, is rarely the case. An exercise which showcased this was drawing the eiffel tower from memory. Everyone knows what it looks like, right? ...Except no one could do it. It always was... wrong. What were the proportions? How many legs does it have? Are there arches? It's actually very difficult to do from memory alone.

The same principles for how to learn to do a walk cycle apply to learning how to change your voice. Go to the mall, get a drink, sit down at a table in the food court and watch people walk past. Instead of studying their body's motion though, just look down at a book or something, ignore their appearance, and listen to what they say. How they say it. Does their voice change pitch as they speak? How often? Does it change rhythmically? Based on the word? The meaning?

What words are used? The phrasing? The delay between one phrase and the next, the amount of emotion shown at a time?

There are so many tiny little things that come into play beyond just if your voice is high or low. But... it's all a skill. You can learn a skill, it just takes time.

Sing do re mi fa so la ti do - you can pause anywhere on that scale you want at any time. You have the range, it's just a matter of using it.

It took me about 7 years of practice and training to get to this point, but yeah, it can be done. =P

Not really a miracle, though. It's not a talent, just a learned skill. It takes a loooot of time and trouble to learn that skill, and it may not be worth the effort for most people to devote themselves to learning such as you can do an awful lot of other things with that investment elsewhere.

Really, it comes down to sacrifice - what are you willing to sacrifice to get what you desire? Set your priorities and work towards what you want most. For me... well, my voice was something I absolutely HATED. I decided I wanted to love it. Aaaand so I fixed it until it was something I didn't hate anymore. It took a lot of study and a lot of practice to match practice to theory, but it can totally be done by most anyone.

I can shift accent with minimal practice now, like the go hug a tree audio took about a month of practice to get the sorta weird irish/scottish hybrid accent just right so it wasn't clearly one or the other, and still be able to moan, maintain a condescending tone and so on for instance. I could shift to the voice of a vapid surfer or the stern sound you'd expect from a ship's captain, to a shy, timid mouse of a girl, or an aggressive party girl.

I know it seems like a miracle, but it's really just a matter of study and practice. If you really want to learn to do that? It's... years of work. Most people don't have the dedication to such for good reason - it's not that important to most people. =P The cost in time is pretty high, and unless you have a reaaaally major need to perfect it (liiike being trans and wanting to pass perfectly), then it's probably not worth the effort.

But, if anyone wants to have exceptional control over their voice? Yeah, you can totally learn to do that. It's not a miracle, just a pain in the ass is all. =P
