It's a mix of those. The attitude of the player plays the biggest part for me especially. I can usually tell when someone's an orbiter from the get go but sometimes they slip in and hound me about plays, treat me as if we're in a full-on OOC relationship, or try to unload their irl personal issues without knowing me that long.

Because they don't exist for you. People have their reasons for deleting characters. They lose interest in playing the character, they have things going on IRL that might make them stop altogether, or they've just been orbited into avoiding playing that character altogether. There are a lot of reasons for dropping a character or quitting.

I'd be a little upset if a close friend up and left without saying anything sure, but they probably had their reasons. A bookmark you shouldn't care about at all.

It's a combination of breast/ass expansion, incest and loli for me all for different reasons and it's become so annoying i've stopped doing them lately.

They expect expansion characters to enjoy the whole thing but I always play realistically and my characters hate it and freak out.

With incest they usually don't know how to respond to my sister character punching them in the arm or teasing them roughly. I suppose they expect horny slut sex right off the bat but man, we grew up together, she's not going to drop her sisterly ways. We need a little build up too to establish things if we're going to be siblings.

And with loli they expect me to be a completely knowledgeable, aggressive sex machine right off the bat. Or they expect me to play a brain dead idiot child like the way inept writers for movies write ten and thirteen year old children that talk like idiots and carry stuffed animals like they've never seen a kid before. Seriously why do people do this. A huge part of the reason I like playing characters in the young teen/tween range is because they sit right on that line between knowledge and innocence, and spotty inconsistency is a huge part of that -- some things they'll be very smart at, either because it caught their limited attention span or simply because they're bright, and some things they'll be completely clueless about. Being all or nothing kinda misses the entire point, to me. People make me sad.

It really depends on the flavor you're going for. I don't have logs, but let me set up the presence instead. The dominant in this scenario is something supernatural, with abilities just as supernatural. One of which was that they passively caused intrusive thoughts in those around them. Being a sub in this scene was about slowly losing to the intrusive thoughts telling you that you really should be worshiping this thing. And, of course, it was *definitely* all your idea. Your brain absolutely wasn't fucked and twisted until your thoughts were warped around this intrusive force. Yes. It started out just our two main characters but from the start he was lazy as fuck. But he praised me for my roleplay and i'm a sucker for that kind of flattery so I stuck around. He wasn't completely horrendous, he structured his sentences well and didn't misspell things. He was just so fucking lazy.

Then after he'd come up with characters with me i'd always without fail end up controlling them plus mine and he ended up completely ignoring my main main character for all the new characters. It was like monster of the week but with his fetishes.

I don't terribly mind /soc/ locals. At least a few people have actually joined the site because they wandered in here, which is kinda cool, reaching a new audience like that. Sure, there's the occasional person that thinks this is a Kik thread, or worse, a "post your state and gender and etc" hookup thread, but they're few and far between. The main issue I have with /soc/ is how goddamn dead it is compared to /tg/, and the lack of new blood (barring the handful of newcomers I already said). Seeing the same few profiles posted over and over, and there's relatively little conversation because it's mostly all the same people, who presumably have already talked about whatever they might otherwise talk about.

/erp/'s problems, to me, are its people and (ironically) the fact that it's a board instead of a single thread. There's some bad eggs over there, some of whom I have personal experience with, which is already enough to give me pause -- if I'm gonna hang out at a landfill, I'll take the landfill that doesn't have people who go out of their way to make my life unpleasant. And >>25236464 covers some of the reasons I dislike /erp/ as a board rather than just a thread, but it's also the fact that having separate threads tends to make discussions hyper-specialized, and it becomes difficult to find a place to post general or cross-topic discussion such that it'll reach a proper audience and actually get some chatter instead of just quietly sliding down the catalog. Threads that fall off page 1 (and moreso off page 2) tend to go without reply for days at a time -- and, on that same note, despite being an entire board, /erp/ threads still move pretty darn slow.

But in the end, the main reason I'm here isn't any huge preference, it's just that it's so much easier for me to idly watch one thread than it is to watch ten. I'm pretty lazy.

Keeping a thread open in /soc/ means we get new blood. Cripplenet is basically a circlejerk, as are Discords and other places. I know a lot of people in tg /Chat/ proper complained about the explosion in popularity - hell, even global mods got involved with an unspoken agreement to curb the growth of /tg/ channels - but ditching the /soc/ legacy general would gain me nothing. There's no reason one can't visit all communities, anyway.

At the bare minimum have an avatar image. The inline images are fancy, but without an avatar you're hopeless. Most people don't have custom art, just stuff they stole from danbooru.

As for approaching, it's a bit of a roll of the dice but as a general rule messaging someone with a compliment to their profile, expressing some shared interest in what they're looking for, and having a scene idea on offer is a good start.
Having your own kinks filled out (not with EVERY kink, mind you) so that people know what you're looking for is good, customs help show what you're really into and why.

Hanging out in chat rooms and just chatting is a good way to find people as well, look at their profiles and if any catch your eye send them a message- spearfishing, as we often call it.

As for approaching in or out of character, the overwhelming default is to approach OOC and set things up like that. People will generally specify if they do it otherwise.

Custom? No, most people use whatever pics they found on the net.

But having good taste in picking that does help a whole lot.

You do need some description on the profile - not much, just get to the point and be lewd.

And really, there are people there on every level of play and effort so you can find something matching. Whether you will be satisfied with that is up to you.

Is that a notes thing? I use an IM client so I don't know what the default browser chat looks like. If so, are you planning on doing RP through notes or chat?

If the latter, I find it better to bookmark people and approach them when they're online on chat. With the notes approach, you face the risk of wasting your time with someone who's rarely online or has a different timezone to you. Results are often instant too, if they like your scene idea.

You should be up front about what you want to do, have some ideas to bounce on the first approach, and plan from there. Your approach doesn't seem so bad to me compared to what I usually get (just a generic 'Hi' 'How are you?'), but you should say what exactly you want to do right off the bat.

F-Chat's also usually better to approach people with, I'd say. Sometimes people just say no when you approach them in Notes because they're no longer interested in playing on that particular character at the moment, while on F-Chat they're directly logged onto that specific character which probably means they still want to use it, especially if they have a Looking status set.

Also, what's your character like? That might be a big part of it too.

I'm working on my character. Trying to make something original so it's kinda "dude mcaverage" college student sort of ordeal. I'm trying to find ways to flesh it out, like specific fantasies or scenes you can do with him. I've seen profiles where they post scene templates or even just nhentai links to doujins they wanna play out, so I might try that.

There are different schools of thought on profile writing, and your first instinct might be to just fill your profile with everything you can think of that relates to your character. That's what I first did, I tried to include every backstory detail, OOC detail, scene ideas, physical description, etc.

IMO (and others may disagree), your profile's job is to advertise your character and your writing style. Therefore, the best way to build a profile is with a short but stylishly and interestingly written description of your character's concept or premise, but not including anything but the most central elements of their backstory or personality. You want to include some physical description there too, but it's better to use an inline than write too much here.

But like I said, everyone has different ideas, and people here might have other thoughts on how your profile should look. The idea is that instead of having your scene ideas on your profile, you just suggest them when you approach people after taking their characters into account.

To be honest, Dude McAverage is like an automatic 'avoid this person' for many people. Especially if they use a generic anime MC or real world images. Doujin links are iffy, but can work alright in getting across what you like. Really focus on the custom kinks to get across what you're into and give yourself some personality and flavor.

Personally, I do notes, because it's not really convenient for me to just sit in the chat for hours. However I've only ever completed TWO scenes through notes. Everything else just kinds of grinds to a halt.

The only things I dislike about noteplay and probably the main reasons I usually opt to do F-Chat plays are the limit on how many you can have, the ease of losing track if you're doing multiple noteplays, and the tendency for a lot of them to just peter out after a while of waiting.

Other than those reasons though, I actually enjoy noteplay a lot and am in a great one at the moment. I love how comfy noteplay can be when everything clicks compared to chat RPs feeling more urgent.

I like that chat RPs basically mean you have their full attention (usually) at that moment. But sometimes when people do provide their full attention, you know when you're getting cucked.

Note RPs, you're guaranteed to have their full attention for that play, more or less, but the long stretches of time in between mean you're most assuredly getting cucked in the meantime and likely to get dropped.

I like to actually relax and chat sometimes, or be able to think of something I really want to do rather than have someone who's too clingy OOC jumping me at the first sight of me for a play I'm not really feeling at the moment. Sometimes I'm just on for like 5 minutes total and have no time to play, so I get tired of having to tell people "Not right now" over and over again. It gets annoying and fatiguing fast if you have a good number of people bookmarking you on pinks especially.

The rule also helps weed out people who don't read profiles. It's not that difficult to abide by.
