Start slow; if you haven't used your fingers at all, you probably don't want to jump into using a dildo.
Use plenty of lube. It's pretty hard to use "too much", but if you don't use enough you're in for some issues.

The single best tip for anal is to listen to your body. Pain (the sharp type at LEAST) is NOT an indicator of anything going right here. Take it slow, start with fingers, then work up to it. I usually do one finger then two, then dildo of similar size to that one (which i get just the head in then stop until I relax then go all the way in). I use spit as a lube and it works fine for me but different people need different things - there are a lot of really good lubes, make sure what you get works with the toy you have - no oil based lubes with silicon based toys.

Many toys smell bad only when you first get them - cleaning them well when you first get it and letting it air out for a bit can help with some, others just always have a plasticy smell.
