I'm guessing pretty likely. Safe place for the socially uninitiated introvert to observe people talking and test the waters without many repercussions. Great in theory, poor in practice. You miss out on learning the social etiquettes and body language of different folk in different regions.

Personally, I haven't been on /soc/ in years so I just thought I'd drop in out of boredom. I don't really have trouble meeting people in real life anymore, and I'm sure that's just a thing that comes with time and experience. I have numerous female friends, though not really attracted to any of them because of difference in beliefs, but they're hilarious and endearing so I hang out with them. I have a very large social circle now, and am invited out nearly every night to do something with a group. As an INTP, a social life really becomes more like a project, and your acquaintances and "friends" become more like objects of observation and experimentation (my best friends I don't treat this way, because there is a real, tangible depth in our relationship.) I wouldn't ever hurt anyone intentionally, or try to manipulate anyone (as a socialite, I'm very laissez-faire; you do you, I'll do me, no one gets hurt,) but I hang out with people more to understand them and how they and humans in general work than I do because I actually enjoy their company. Also, once I run out of things to observe (certain character qualities, dynamics between two friends, placing that in an unfamiliar scenario, etc.) I find it very hard to want to go out with them. But the depths of humanity are endless, so I rarely burn out my interests, and when I do, I give it space until I'm ready again. Real friends, however - the people I legitimately enjoy spending time with - they are friends for life.
