Although no setting of the Requiem Mass can, as a general rule, match up to Mozart's brilliant piece in D minor, that doesn't mean that you should write off other settings, nor does Mozart's beautiful Lacrimosa have a monopoly on sad, death related orchestral pieces.

Cherubini's Dies Irae is notable first for it's gong, as well as the speed with which it goes through the entire Sequentia (at generally under 10 minutes). Notable is the tonal changes throughout the piece, highlighted by the strong exclamation points during particularly 'turbulent' moments (Tuba mirum and Rex tremendae). For all it's fantastic emotion, especially leading up to the Confutatis, the Lacrimosa is actually quite flat.

Of course, when talking about classical settings of Dies Irae, it'd be almost impossible to not mention Verdi's classic, which is arguably more famous than Mozart's own. Still, the weird 'teeth gnashing' sound of the 'Quando tremor est...' lines can put people off, which is unfortunate, since the Tuba mirum (starting at 2:28 above) is perhaps the best.
