They're not really helicopter parents, but if you had a son who has spent the last 2 years confined to his room, then you'd obviously have questions is one day he just started going out once a week for 2-3 hours. Plus I'd need to ask them for money so I could catch a bus/train wherever I needed to go and even then I'm not sure if I could even get myself on a bus without freaking out and just going home.

It's a different lifestyle, but just because something isn't what you're used to; that doesn't mean it's not good.
Explore the bar life over there. They have a lot of pubs and bars that are focal points for their social interactions. Don't fall into the habit of going out and getting pissed up.
Be willing to explore other bars and social circles, see what you enjoy.
Also, enjoy the city itself. It's beautifully laid out. The parks and nature exposure is fantastic.
You'll change to match the city. Go there willing to learn and change :)

You are aware it's called the bush capital, right?
Any way it's a great place to live if you want to settle down and raise kids or if you are only here for a short while so you don't blow through all the touristy stuff like National Gallery, War Memoria,l Questacon, etc.
Considering you are young and coming here for uni, it's probably going to be a let down since the nightlife(what little of it there actually was) has dropped off substantially in the last few years, making the whole place a graveyard by 6PM.
