Disabled members of /soc/ support group/hookup thread.

Let's face it, some of us have various ailments and we maybe feel like outcasts and are afraid of getting with someone for fear of being judged, left, laughed at, whatever.

Let's share our worries about dating/sex, any success stories, and talk about our conditions.

I'll start:
>Transverse Myelitis
>go from bedridden to hiking repeatedly, takes about 1 year to recover almost fully.
>can't get off normally so not willing to risk rejection from a regular person but don't know anyone else who could appreciate my condition and be extra patient
>only one partner since getting the disease and she made excuses to dump me
>generally entertain myself so long as I keep busy but am ridiculously lonely
>>
>>24177492
mfw I majored in neuroscience and have a deep interest in pro-inflammitory diseases and disorders. Please elaborate. How long has it been since you developed it/ is full recovery likely at this point?
>>
>>24177492
Suspected Collagen VI Muscular Dystrophy. Any other cripples want to exchange skypes and have our own secret club? No normies allowed
>>
I have assburgers
>>
>>24178750
Full recovery has never truly been possible, it's just that I recover remarkably well, meaning very few residual issues.

Much of that is thanks to medicine and just being lucky. Hardly any skin hypersensitivity, just a bit of foot drop that doesn't impact walking, I do suspect some cognitive function impairment but it never showed up on any tests and is probably caused by meds.

One year I'll hike a mountain and lay down miles and another year I'm in a wheelchair for a month and spending loads of time in PT.

A challenge I feel is that I appear normal physically so I worry that anyone who dates me would be disappointed to learn I am higher maintenance, despite being pretty fiercely independent.

C3-T9 though. Had it for 9 years
>>
>>24178773
How severe is it? I looked at a video on YouTube called "Sarah" after searching your condition to get an idea (reading about conditions never helps describe the impact).

Have you ever met any really great people who you can rely on for support? I don't have much in that department and sometimes it's lonely.

>>24178888
What's the biggest challenge you've faced? And do you find it easier to handle certain situations more than you might suspect someone without the condition to have?
>>
>>24178988
I'm not as bad as the person in the video. I've met great people and live a somewhat normal life. What do you got?
>>
>>24178988
Oh I'm retarded I just saw you said what you had
>>
>>24178963

Why do anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Ibuprofen) worsen inflammation? Guy with Ulcerative Colitis here
>>
>>24179022
The only place I've ever heard of that occurring is in the gut with NSAIDs as the anti-inflammatory. and that's NSAIDs block IFABP an enzyme that is raised during gut injury (in an effort to repair). By blocking a required signal for repair the anti-inflammatory drugs actually lead to further inflammation. They also have a tendency to raise the pH in the gut and lead to some nasty outcomes. In fact a type of NSAID (the ones that block COX2 exclusively can lead to stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, and holes in the stomach. I don't know of any other example where an anti-inflammatory drug would cause inflammation. If you have ulcerative colitis I'm sure they've asked you to watch out for these types of drugs.
>>
>>24179022
Disclaimer that's virtually all my relevant knowledge on the subject :( sorry if that answer is shit
>>
>>24179000
Just turned 30
>>
>>24179085
Can I ask if you think getting the disease at 21 impeded your ability to make friends? Also I'm curious can you not get off normally because erectile function is no longer intact? sorry if that's invasive

The worse thing that I have is hypermobility and lax ligaments that have the tendency to tear which just take a bit of time to heal it's easy to fix with braces and a cane and I'm fine majority of the time. With only three major tears in the last 7 years.
>>
>>24179144
I too am curious about why I can't get off normally. I feel it's ed but the why is something I might start pursuing with my neurologist. It's been low on the priority list for a while and I have viagra which works well enough but I never bothered to find out about how it happens. For some years if my cock was stimulated, my leg would twitch.

I think it prevents me from making friends because I can't drink. So bars are rather dull and I never enjoy them, same with house parties. I am not very social so I feel like I won't date either. Nobody here on OKCupid is very attractive to me.

When a ligament tears sounds painful. What would cause it? Is it like you stretch too much during some activity and suddenly have to be hospitalized? Sorry you have to go through that btw. Are there any benefits to hypermobility?
>>
I was born with both feet club foot (bilateral talipes) and since my doctors fucked up I was left from since I've been able to walk with knees that dislocated frequently and thus I'm a bit nervous although it's fixed I still can't 100% hang with normies because they always walk too fast and I feel guilty for making them have to stop and check on the group crip.
>>
>>24179186
I'm sorry to hear that. I know plenty of people that don't drink though (not just those straightedge people). And I don't think ED is uncommon in people that have Transverse Myelitis. I'm pretty sure you could get with women too, especially if you were down to use toys on them. Are you on any other medications?

Well the ligaments are loose so my joints often pop out of their sockets and tear them on the way out or in. The hypermobility just makes me really flexible but that's about all. Doctors say that if I wanted to give birth in the future without having a C section it's most likely that the ligaments holding both of my knees in place will tear and make that experience somehow more painful.
>>
>>24180337
I wonder if a water birth might help ease things if you wanted to avoid a c-section?

I'm on a few other meds to help with skin sensitivity and muscle tightness and Mycophenolate to keep me stable. Not fond of any of it but I do what I do.

One thing I learned is to keep my condition private from someone I'm interested in dating because it can scare people off. Except I haven't been with anyone to test this keeping it secret with and I'm nervous they'll think I'm bad in bed if I'm not using toys because my lower back muscles and legs will tire out quickly. But more importantly I want someone who is extra patient because they understand what I'm going through on a deeper level. Haven't found anyone else who I'm confident about that thinks I'm their type
>>
All I have are brain problems. Right now the most obnoxious is that I cannot perceive depth which makes driving awful. It is also really hard to control my body in general. GF is a recluse due to anxiety and keeps not breathing, I feel the worst for her.
>>
>>24178773
I have becker's muscular dystrophy and would be down for some sort of skype group.
>>
Skype group for people with disabilities https://join.skype.com/u2C1aaZvY6AL
>>
>>24180685
I'm far off from having kids but I'll have to look into it that it might ease some of the strain on my legs.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of women out there who are patient when it comes to sex. Not nearly the same thing but I was with a guy who had really bad premature ejaculation for a few years. He would barely enter me/ not even enter me at all before it was over. If people like you they're willing to work to make sex enjoyable. Why do you say that you don't think you've found someone that thinks you're their type? Do you mean physically or as a person?
>>
>>24180685
Also If you're taking Mycophenolate do you have TM caused by MS? Sorry I don't mean to be annoying with all these questions but I'm really interested
>>
>>24181096
Likely both physically and mentally. I'm mostly normal, just not social so people don't really know I exist or what I have to offer.

>>24181324
Actually don't have MS, which in some way makes one feel even more isolated because you're not really fit for MS support groups and in my case I feel like I wouldn't fit a TM group because I hardly suffer outward appearance effects like most.

>>24180904
I'll have to give this a try. Gotta make a burner Skype first
>>
>>24181355
I'm sorry you feel isolated, do you have any interaction through work at least? If you have a kik you're welcome to kik me
>>

>>
Would love to date a deaf qt.
>>
>>24181955
why? just wondering

i'm deaf and have terrible luck with dating...
they all like the idea of it at first, but don't realize how annoying it can be if you're not used to being around deaf people
>>
I've always had an interest in musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders does anyone know of a good forum that's not just for support?
>>
>>24182769
How can it be annoying? The only problem I can see is if you need to grab one's attention but a simple tap or hit on a surface that they're touching would probably work.

I would only feel bad about my poor skills in asl and I feel like I would butcher my sentences and end up confusing people.
>>
>>24182892
Nah, which is terrible because i should since i have one
>>
>>24182954
Oh somehow I missed that. What are your major symptoms?
>>
>>24182991
Oh wait i'm retarded I thought you meant neuromuscular
>>
>>24183012
Oh you have muscular dystrophy, hold old are you? How has the weakness progressed?
>>
>>24183036
I'm 22 and it's progressed a bit, cant walk and contractures in joints are tighter. my type doesnt affect my heart though so i got lucky there
>>
>>24182912
it's a little more if you don't know anything about asl and most of my exes didn't. i would try speaking, but i could tell it made them uncomfortable because my voice is like weird, but idk i tried...
it's cool that you know asl though
>>
>>24183046
we've got the opposite problem with our joints
>>
>>24183111
hyperflexibility? What do you got?
>>
>>24183120
Yep I posted it before just lax ligaments and hypermobile joints hyperflexibility. I don't really have anything awful and have only had ligaments tear 3 times in the past 7 years.
>>
>>24183157
thats like nothing, glad you havent had many tears lately

This makes me curious what other aspects took your exes by surprise? Aside from the voice being different? The only thing I can imagine, other than signing, is that it's like living with a very very quiet person.
>>
Remember to join the skype group https://join.skype.com/rl06TkPdjXbQ
>>
>>24183740
my id changed because i'm on my phone now, but it's funny that you say that...my one ex would accuse me of sneaking up on her all the time because i was so quiet.
i guess it's just the little things....no movies unless they have subtitles, can't talk to me if i'm driving unless you sign, i have a really hard time at restaurants or parties, or when there's a group of people talking in general, can't call to me from another room.
just a bunch of little things that start to bum people out as time goes on...
i've tried dating deaf people too, but they are crazy and don't really like me because i don't really identify with deaf culture aside from asl.
>>
>>24184440
I'd argue that it's more about finding someone who has a lot of patience and some experience firsthand with something like what you have or someone sick in general. Caregiving can be tough
>>
>>24184440
If none of your exes knew asl and didn't like you speaking then how did you communicate? I only know how to say "douchebag" and "pay attention
>>
>>24184776
i'm not really looking for a caregiver, just someone to meet me halfway and learn some signing. it would be nice to find someone who has some firsthand experience, but so far that hasn't happened yet
>>
I have a slew of health issues but I'm not disabled. I do my very best to push myself every day.

I have brain damage giving me terrible to no impulse control and some issues speaking. I also have very poor vision from retinital pigmentosis. Finally this year I was diagnosed with Chrons. Im already fat and transgender so I'm seriously considering taking the bullet express to happy town.

I read through the whole thread and I'm sad. Not that I pity you, I just wonder how many people assume I'm normal and healthy because you cant see whats wrong with me. How many other people suffering who might understand or offer comfort might be walking past because I look able.
>>
>>24184864
same way communicate with all hearing people - i try my best to read lips and speak clearly. i tried to teach them some signs and like how to finger spell, but it's not easy and i don't think i'm a very good teacher
>>
>>24185238
Would you be willing to teach me some?

>>24185188
I feel the same. There's a lot of uncertainty and risk putting yourself out there only to find out the other person isn't willing to meet you halfway. Eventually I'd imagine one would start to question why they bother
>>
>>24185314
i'm not really sure how i could, i mean i could direct you to some sites and videos, but like i said i'm not a very good teacher. you would be better off with a professional site/instructor. if you're really interested and live near a community college or something a lot of them have intro or conversational asl.
>>
>>24185476
yeah pretty much. it's the same shit over and over, everything's cool at first then the novelty of dating a deaf person like wears off or something and it's over.

Maybe sensation is dulled and isn't enough or isn't right/uncomfortable.
Maybe she doesn't know what makes it happen (I sure didn't).
Maybe she'll be nervous about you gunning for the big o and become so nervous it doesn't happen.
Maybe it can cause a painful leg spasm or back contraction or whatever and she's avoiding it.
Maybe she's wondering if you're only with her as a notch on a stick and is therefore distracted or guarded.

These are just personal reflections and obviously vary by person and circumstance

I've always liked the caretaker role. I've always felt somewhat bad about it, but there's something about frail men in wheel chairs that drives me crazy. I dated a guy for 4 years that had motor impairments caused by a skeletal disorder that required several surgeries. Now I seem to have developed a thing for skinny guys in wheelchairs and helping them heal. If anyone here fits that bill and is interested or just wants to talk let me know.

I can see where that would be terribly irritating.

I have no knowledge of ASL. Can't say it's honestly been anything that's interested me, but I'm not certain if that's because I have a general aversion to languages, or because I've never spent much time around the hearing impaired.

That said, it seems like, given enough time, some if it (most of it?) should come naturally. Like what happens if you're immersed in a foreign language culture.

Along that vein of thought, give this a read:

I got diagnosed with late stage lyme 2 years ago after pain in arms and legs kept getting worse. I've got about 7-15 minutes of walking in me a day and that needs at least 2 days of recuperating with no activity.
I can only use my hands/arms only for very short "bursts" which hurts and need recuperation, typing something on 4chan slowly with long pauses between browsing/posting makes up my social life at the moment.
I'm glued to my sofa and watch anime, tv shows, movies all day cause that's all I can do.
Sometimes depression hits kinda hard and I use different meditations to cope, just mentioning it in case others who are depressed haven't tried that yet, I think it's saved my life on multiple occasions. I'm starting an intravenous treatment in september which I'm not happy about cause it'll make me even more tired but the regular antibiotics treatment is not helping me after 2 years.
I was single for a long time even before my illness, so I guess most hope is out the window on that one. I'm a 35 m in belgium, and my kik is rinbol if anyone is in a similar predicament and doesn't mind longish pauses in between communication.

You know, some of us "normies" have been around enough to not take a hit from that. Its easy to be both jaded AND empathic.

Where at?

I'm an able-bodied male with a thing for girls with physical impairments.

Open question: What do physically impaired people think of this?
>>
I'm not crippled, but I have Tourette's. It used to be a lot easier to manage, but it's been getting worse over the years due to an adverse reaction to medication and the natural progression of the disorder.

What are your preferred words/ticks?
>>
>>24206777
Preferred? I'd prefer to have none of them, lol. As for motor, my head whips back and side to side, I punch myself in the heart, forehead, and back of head, I stomp my feet, my arms/hands seize up and grip onto things, I wave, I clap, I make motions like I'm punching my left palm, I hit others, my face scrunches and eyebrows furrow, I breathe in suddenly, I tap others three times, and I sometimes grab and hold others and punch them. It's actually fucked. My vocal tics are simple enough where I only pop my lips and "Hoo" like an owl. Turns out those sound pretty cute when I'm drunk, so I guess that's a plus!

Kek, yeah, I guess that would make sense.

Shit, that sounds intense! M or F?

I'm female, 18 years old. I was diagnosed at 16 because my parents hoped I would just grow out of it.

Are you in a relationship? If so, do you beat the fuck out of him all the time?

How's the prosthetics looking for those who don't have celebrity status online? I can't imagine everybody gets the same choices.
>>
>>24206998
I am, lol, and I do. Most people understand. For instance, when it kicks up after I eat, he'll hold my hand and let my body scrinch and seize up until it calms back down again. I'm just grateful my teeth don't gnash down anymore, but I'm sure he's much more thankful for that than I could ever be.

A question for anyone who knows. How do you use cannabis if you can't smoke and does it even help with pain, symptoms etc. if not smoked?

Been looking into it for my brother but it's kind of illegal in my country, no such thing as "medical" marijuana here.
>>
>>24207031
Anyone ever call the cops on you? Lol

>How do you use cannabis if you can't smoke

Eat it. Make brownies or something with the oil.

It's super effective edible but takes longer to kick in and if you cook it the whole house will smell like weed.
>>
>>24207047
No. I'm sure it'll happen eventually. I'm very good at telling when it's going to happen, so I'm usually in the midst of explaining and apologizing while I'm doing it.
>>
>>24207102
Now I'm curious what you look like. Post visage?

How does one spot if the oil you get is what you buy?

Guessing uk by the shit laws we have regarding medical cannabis.

10g of weed slow cooked in 500g butter and 250 ml water over night will give you a potent cannabutter for a first timer.

Don't bother with oils unless you know someone personally who makes them for cancer patents *trust me these people exist* or you'll be making it yourself after growing it yourself. Do not buy any "legal" oils from online they do not work.

Anyone else?
