It's a damn shame they broke up.
But now Loomis is touring (and maybe writing) with Arch Enemy.
I would have loved to see Jeff and Angela on stage together.
Who would you say is your favorite band that's still in action?
>>
>>23437051
Loomis is such a powerhouse when he plays, I am endlessly impressed by him. I used to listen to a lot of Arch Enemy when Angela was still fronting them but aside from 'War Eternal' I haven't listened to much of Alissa. As for currently still together I may get a lot of flack for it but I love Opeth, even now that they've pretty much gone full prog rock they mean a lot to me and I have spent thousands of hours just sitting listening to Opeth albums silently appreciating the music.

I've been addicted to Opeth since I heard Ghost of Perdition. Yeah they did go full prog which is geat music but weird because it's like listening to Ulver cover Dream Theater. Not many other people seem to be into that balanced death/prog sound that they mastered over the years. it's either brutal or bubbly for a lot of my friends.
>>
>>23437074
No I don't sorry, as for genres I really like tech, doom, death, some black, prog, melodic, groove and occasionally folk.
>>
>>23437097
Metallica seems to be the usual entry point for a lot of metal heads. they are the most palatable for newcomers and veterans alike. their post-black stuff is kinda commercial but still sounds all right for what it is. Once I figured out who SLAYER was, I essentially gave up on Metallica.

Yeah it really seems that way, I'm fairly sure they were the band that introduced him too.

Slayer is one of those bands that I will listen to but, for whatever reason, could never really get into them. Not sure why that is though.

From Metallica I kind of jumped around random stuff for a bit, then started on Dimmu Borgir. Then got really into black metal and death metal, and eventually funeral doom. Now I pretty much just stick to those three.

A rough, probably not completely accurate history, but as best as I can recall:
>Introduction: Rob Zombie, Korn, Classic/Dad Rock, Nu Metal and Metallica at 4~5 y/o
>Marilyn Manson, SOAD, Mushroomhead, Slipknot and most radio-friendly rock/metal/grunge bands at 6~9 y/o
>Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, Opeth, Prog and Power Metal at 8~13
>Death, Trivium, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer at 12~14 y/o
>Thrash, crossover, punk and a LOT of shitty Deathcore bands at 14 y/o
>Full blown thrasher at 15~16 y/o
>Drone Doom, Black metal elitist at 17 y/o
>Doom/Sludge/Stoner metal, DSBM and Crust Punk at 17~18 y/o, also started opening up to non-metal acts after finding Swans
>19~now: Noise, Doom/Sludge, Grindcore/Powerviolence, Black Metal, some Death Metal, Shoegaze, Goth, Punk, Post-music, Industrial/EBM, etc.
Sometimes I go back and listen to records I played at simpler times.
>>
>>23437118
Pale Communion is fantastic. It really shows the range of Opeth's skill as a band. Yeah they can melt your fucking face, but they can also make sweet sweet love to your ears.
Definitely not a band you can put into a category, which itself is pretty amazing.

My own translation, beware: english might suck

As we leave the mountains behind us, valleys, ridges and the summits, abysses and wheather crosses, the stone encrusted men

Our eyes wander upwards, above snowcovered clouds, on the plant`s mysterious path, that we can not comprehend.

Send me beyond
of all that is wake
let me sleep
by the stars

fourteen moons that faded
before the dark horizons
only the comet`s shadows,
was what we could see

On the ice-covered roofs,
we came so close to the night`s sky
even the lights of pulsars
never seemed unapproachable

let me flee
in morpheus arms
and meet me
at the brightest star

>>23437041
Been into some symphonic composers like Edward Grieg and Wagner as well as morricone and other classical film music composers and listened to german punk bands a lot as a kid.

The symphonic stuff i listened to intruduced me sooner or later to symphonic/ melodic metal artists, first one on the darker spectrum was dimmu borgir and ensiferum. And from that it progressed onto all other popular bands in those cathegory.
The part of me that listened to punk music somehow first ended up in metalcore, later more technical stuff like born of osiris, the faceless and even vildhjarta.
Over the last years i have gone more into ambient black metal/post black metal though i still enjoy pagan/folk stuff a lot.

shudders. Regardless.
I honestly agree with you that Ghost isn't metal. I'm a fan of Ghost and I'm a metalhead. That does not necessarily imply that Ghost is metal. We were not posting them in the thread, we're just wearing the shirt. A lot of people argue that Ghost is Doom Metal. I would almost agree but I think they're just missing that seriousness to them that a Doom Metal band would need. I do think of them as just a rock band, but I don't hate them for that. I don't think there's anything wrong with them being a rock band, even if their aesthetic is what you would expect of some hardcore metal band.
>>
>>23438012
what about the BC ? I'm really not into them so I might have missed something there
>>
>>23438029
they were only legally Ghost BC in America for some stupid legal reason for a while. They aren't "Ghost BC" in America anymore either. to just rip some text from wikipedia,
"On February 5, 2013, the band announced a name change to "Ghost B.C." in the United States for legal reasons.[16] A Nameless Ghoul said, "B.C. is obviously a pun on ‘Before Christ’, but it’s just an amendment. In our world, we’re just gonna be called Ghost ... The B.C. is silent, and as soon as we can, it’s gonna be taken away forever."[17] They officially dropped the amendment from their name in 2015.[18]"

>>23438055
NP. I also highly suggest giving them an honest try just not considering them a metal band. I didn't like Ghost when I first heard them back in 2013, and I only recently got into them. Listen to their newest album, it's objectively their best. You could also give their EP, "If you have Ghost" a try, but it's entirely covers.
>>
>>23438068
I'm not criticizing the composition, though, the music is good quality without being outstanding, but I think what really poses a problem for me is the vocals
His voice sounds really pop and I don't like the dynamic in his singing
Still giving them a listen
I like what they do with the organs
>>
>>23438101
I honestly totally agree. The singer isn't great. The whole changing identities and shit is kinda cool, it would be great if they ACTUALLY changed singers between albums, but it's just a new mask each album. Past Papa, they're a great band. I stated his sound as "Swedish Weird Al" and I still stand by that even as a fan of the band
>>
>>23438068
This one is objectively good
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A-IoOEPbUs

But the vocals kill it for me. I think it has to do with the fact that they sound "out of tune" with the music

I appreciate it my man. We've gotten some claims the we sound like Carcass, death, or Sadus the most so that's why I was wondering. Still cool to know People dig our shit. Our Next album is comin this summer and it's going to be way better produced.

Tool is prog metal tbqh with a really shit fanbase of inbread faggots, i personally consider them a "guilty pleasure". Its one of the few things that the fan base just absolutely ruins.

It's prog rock, how is it metal.
>>
Tbh tool is prog rock but with danny carrey on the drums they are harder than they seem

We can all agree here that this album is a pure gold brick shat out by our metal gods when it comes to both of these geniuses and their guitar work. Nothing soothes my ears more than Marty Friedmans vibrato. These guys are cold af.

An addition to this is a must. Chuck made another project and made this Masterpiece of an album after sounds of perseverance which almost sounds much alike if you compare the two but with a different vocalist. I could agree that it isn't the Ye'old death we all know and love (specially after executing every album he ever made in Death) but when it came to his lead, rhythm guitar work you can hear the voice of his soul ever evolving and it's just pure fucking excellence.
