I insist on meeting in a public place and going to a neutral location for the actual fun times. Observe your would-be partner from a distance before approaching. It doesn't hurt to have mace or stun gun on hand, but avoid a gun or knife because that'll freak someone out.
Then again the only CL hookups I've had were with trannies, so I naturally I'm paranoid about getting jumped by a group of rednecks looking for a queer to bash.
