So that post in the last thread complaining about flakes has me thinking.

Does saying "I'm doing X and Y right now and I don't really know when I can play again" and then ending up not being able to play again that day count as leading someone on, or wasting their time? They said they were okay with it at the time and told me to just message them whenever was good for me, so I figured they weren't going to wait around or anything and that it wouldn't be a problem, but lately their reception of me seems much cooler, if outwardly polite and enthusiastic.

Am I being too sensitive? Or am I missing obvious signs of "I don't want any drama but you've treated me poorly, now leave me alone because I'm just not that interested anymore"?

Really well! It's an ongoing process, but we've clicked pretty well so far. I used to do this exclusively, and still do occasionally when the fancy strikes me. You can get good results, just be warned it requires a little bit more work on your end. Without a hook your profile isn't going to attract anyone towards you, so you're going to have to go out and message people first. You'll also have to put a little more effort into your first message and tell your prospective partner how you plan on modifying your character to fit theirs. Essentially, you have to make up a new character on the fly every time you start a new RP.

Oh, and we all have multiple partners. That's what he means by "no monogamy".

I've been RPing so long, I remember a time when you could actually have story-based group RP as the majority of RP.

I remember when 'group RP' even extended to a public scale where there was straight up common lore accepted. Like when the two main user rooms in yahoo(Back before the big internet pedo scare of the early 2000's shut down user rooms. Thanks, mainstream news) had an official 'war' between them you could participate in. It was all a sort of military drama, whether you were a combatant, or a civilian just trying to live through it all, full of intrigue, violence, romance, etc.

I even remember when people took combat fairly seriously, with 'referees' that were usually chat mods, and an agreement over the three fighting systems in place at the time(t1,t2, t3). Back then, you could very easily end up losing a character if you went picking a fight you couldn't back up.

I remember the first few actual, dedicated roleplay communities. The most prominent was Gundam-Official(Later known as Anime-central after a changing of hats.). Back then, actual chatrooms were a fairly new thing, you couldn't make these big, imposing paragraph posts like you could now, and even then, most people were mostly my age at the time(11'ish to 16-18) anyway, so people's writing skills weren't that great. Funnily, I think this was kind of the true beginning of online dating, and it really screwed with RP as suddenly people were treading in game romance like RL ones, to the point where cliques formed, and people lost friends over mess that happened in character. Groups started to break apart, and with it, story RP kind of became an instrument just to set up the next sex scene. Around this point, RP is a widely known thing and the communities have exploded. By the time I came back from my time in the Army, there were multiple dedicated websites to it, with profile systems in place, and effectively what we have now with private rooms and PMs to boot. Now, suddenly you have these fancy HTML profiles with pictures, music, inlines, kinks, and backstories. More than ever, we drift further apart while people cherry pick their 'perfect partner'.

It's not hard to see why they would be concerned with what the character is, but it's very hard to see how this transfers over to the player.
Sexuality is a weird thing, people are attracted to some things and not others. People are attracted to some things on x but not on y. I don't think this is hard to understand.
And yes, f-list's system can definitely use some reworks in the gender and sexuality systems, but for your example, people generally think of the regular male form when they put males under no. That's what most male profiles are. This works into your point, though, f-list needs a better system to fix this problem.

Poison's a special case because there's tons of conflicting information on what she's supposed to be due to localization troubles and capcom being capcom. I believe the most widely held belief is trans, but pre-operation.
It's pretty obvious what most people mean when they have males under no. This is a problem of what characters identify as vs what they present as, which I agree that f-list's current system does not provide a way to deal with, and it should.
