For me simple techniques are checking line and box. I never do temporary numbers, but you can do stuff like check perpendicular lines and stuff like that.

I used to do these alot for fun, but they are very mechanical. It doesn't take much problem solving, you just go through the motions. It is rather therapeutic though.
