Is it worth getting into graph theory nowadays? I'm starting my master's research and need to start thinking about a subject. I know it's a widely studied area filled with tons of smarter people than me, but is it worth it?

that's a joke, right? that pic?
>>9150006
Yes, it is
>>9150007
good, good.
was a bit worried there.
and to answer your question, yes it is. solid for a CS master's student.
Go HoTT or go HoMM.

Are you Hungarian?
>>9150006
This isn't
>>9150006
Some day some guys make program to convert decimal to romans writers over 6000 lines.

Not him, but a disproportionate amount of graph theorists are Hungarian.
>>9150004
graph theory is really cool, personally i would consider a subset of graph theory like network theory

You only need to know the first one, that is homotopy type theory. There are many opportunities for research there, as well as grants. It's a big deal in formal methods, but everyone apart from the IAS people is affraid of it, so there's a lot of low-hanging fruit if you learn the math. But worry not, if math isn't your cup of tea, you can still learn it and, instead of extending it, you can start applying it. Getting a grant for that is basically as easy as saying "gimme $$$, i want to apply HoTT"

I actually like math pretty much. Before starting my master's in CS I was taking undergrad Math and CS, that's why I'm kinda drawn to graph theory.
My plan originally was to research on metaheuristics and approximative algorithms, but since I learned it's more about statistics (and I can't stand statistics) it just kinda lost its appeal to me.

every area is widely studied and filled with people smarter than you

shut the fuck up cretin
What about Category Theory then? Anyone here into that?

Good luck doing any meaningful category theory research without being mathematician.
