I think if you are an engineer you should automatically be able to work in a trade as well

Try studying the NEC and see if you can take a master electrician test for your state or city. You may need to talk your way through for them to let you take it without any references from other master electricians or without any work history in the trades.
Alternatively you could try taking an apprenticeship through the union and test up to a certain year.

How is that even possible? The average electrician only knows that + and - mustn't touch or you'll go boom boom and that if the livepen goes on there's is power, how can they question the knowledge of an engineer?
