Hey /sci/
About to start a stem degree, software engineering at ASU specifically. What should I know?
Has anyone taken it or is anyone taking it?

1) Is not real engineering. Software Engineering is more a mix of management, basic algorithms, client interaction and the craft of writing software
2) You need to keep yourself relevant. Build a portfolio to go along with your CV.
3) Don't go to /g/ to argue programming languages. Just fucking don't. Pick your tools and build your craft.
4) Experiment with as many technologies as you can during your degree. You'll learn more this way.
5) Try to go into an internship ASAP. It'll give you a feel of what is like.
t. CSE with an MSc in SE.

What can I do to build a portfolio?

Pretty much any project you can contribute to (and demonstrate) or interesting pet projects you've done. GitHub is a big ally here. Now, before we jump into whatever shithole GH can be, remember that you need to make/prove your skills. For example, if you just patch minor stuff or do translations, is not something your employer would care about. Is about showing off your skills. See http://matt.might.net/articles/what-cs-majors-should-know/ for more details.
