Hi /sci/, /tg/ here. I'm in a campaign right now and was hoping to get some answers regarding sound and its lethal applications. More immediately how loud or how many decibels would you need at minimum to kill insects like bees and wasps. Or would you be able to with just a specific frequency in hertz?

Secondly, how hard would it be to build an LRAD, and how hard would it be to get to 200db? 300db? What would be the expected force from 200/300db respectively coming out of the device.

You need to find the resonance frequency of whatever part of its body you want to impair or damage. But even so, you'd need something pretty strong with just sound.

I need this ASMR

do you have some kind of noise marine knock off going?

Some light research tells me they respond to 38-44kh, but I think you're asking about a specific frequency to cause eruption correct? Well, lets say that power is not necessarily the issue here, what would be a say blanket decibel rating to kill them? 130db? 150db? 170db+? I'm unsure how much sound you'd need to make for that alone, or if the required sound would wind up also creating physical damage to people trying to use the device. iirc 145 is the threshold to cause permanent deafness.

Oh, separate question. If I were to play a sound at 41kh and at 160db, would the sound still cause physical injury despite not being able to hear it? Want to know if in turning that on I just instantly deafened my character.

Yes. Actually hearing a sound has nothing to do with whether it will cause damage.

Good to know. Thank you.

You would want the wavelength of your sound to the same size or smaller then your target.

You could use multiple quieter emitters and just have their phases properly align at your target and cancel everywhere else.

You could use parabolic or elliptical reflectors (or some other waveguide) for more directionality.

Instead of levitating you could "pinch"
