>Lang's Undergrad Algebra looks like it's written for brainlets
what good algebra textbooks are there? Something between two of there books
>seems too hard
>contains too much material
if you're trying to learn, who are you to judge? You'll never learn anything if you're afraid of the process of learning it. Get good.

If you're a beginner, Artin's Algebra is hands down the best introduction

yes

You're supposed to learn algebra without knowledge of category theory. Category theory is super new historically speaking, and most people only learn about it after algebra (and the rest of standard undergraduate material). There are some good books which do both at the same time, but don't get into just because of the memers who think it's the pinnacle of math (it's not).

you can try to but it's sort of like learning high school chemistry and then learning university level chemistry, you realize you were being taught a sort of 'half-truth' the first time around
