They aren't, generally. You do realize the distance between the Earth, moon, and sun varies all the time right? And the rare instance in which they are certain distances apart is called a solar eclipse.

An eclipse happens when they line up.

If the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, you get a lunar eclipse. Which can only happen at the full moon, but does not happen every full mom because the Moon's orbit is not on the exact same plane as the Earth's orbit.

If the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth, you get a solar eclipse. These can be partial, if the Moon only blocks a part of the Sun as seen from Earth, or Total, if the Moon blocks the whole solar disk. You also get annular eclipses when the Moon is in the furthest part of it's orbit and so is too small, visually, to block the whole disk of the sun -- it leaves a ring of sunlight all around the Moon, and you can't se the corona.

This is incorrect.

It's when the line up that makes an eclipse, when they line up in the right order that you get a solar eclipse. You could then add that when they line up, in the correct order and then are the right distance apart, you get a total solar eclipse.

But without the alignment, the distance will never be right to make a solar (or lunar) eclipse.

A bunch of people across the river in the next county park their cars on the side of the highway and watch the fireworks and then get back in their cars and try to get back onto the highway. Always a mess. I kinda doubt there will be people stuck "for days" in traffic though. During totality you get to see the inner solar system in its entirety for just a brief moment. Here's a star chart so you can familiarize yourself with the eclipsed sky and prepare where to look for what so you don't fumble in stupid awe at the time.
In Idaho (where I'll be) the Sun will be SE by E. Facing that direction:
Mercury will be just below the eclipse, and
Mars will be just above the eclipse (if it's not too dim to see, does it look orange?), and
Venus higher up, above Mars.
Not sure if you'll see Regulus (a bright star), but here's an interesting note: a very similar eclipse configuration in 1914 seen from Crimea allowed astronomers to measure the offset of Regulus's position, thus confirming a prediction of relativity's model that there's a bending of space by gravity (the Sun's gravity in this case).
Jupiter may be just rising. It's very bright, and may very well be visible at eclipse. We are moving away from it.

Relative to the Sun, Mercury is moving upwards and will pass to the right of the Sun (inferior conjunction on the 26th). If it passed in front of the Sun, we'd have a "transit of Mercury."
Mars is moving upward as we catch up to it on the inside track. We lap Mars (opposition) is a year away. On the map, it shows Mars moving down. It really is, but more slowly than the Sun. So it is increasing separation and is why I said "up" earlier.
Venus is decently far from the Sun, but is closing in on it - greatest western elongation was over a month ago. It is moving away from us and down on its way to the far side of the Sun in January (superior conjunction).
The winter hexagon will be high up in the southwest, so look for lots of bright stars. Sirius is the brightest star (next to the Sun) in the sky. It'll be about halfway up the sky just right of south.

Things to look for and monitor as totality approaches:
Will you see the shadow approach from the west, and/or disappear to the east?
If it's hazy or cloudy, can you see the shadow on the clouds?
Listen - does it get quiet (except for others around you whooping it up)?
During totality, you can look directly at the Sun's corona without dark glasses. Hold your hand/fist up at arm's length so you can quantify the size and remember in the future.

Depends on where along the track you are.

Lots of folks are expected to head for Oregon to catch the earliest glimpse of the eclipse, and California is populous and relatively close. Based on hotel and campsite reservations, some small towns along the route are expecting their population to triple for the day, and these are towns with one gas station, bad cell phone coverage and maybe a diner to get a meal. Add some shitty roadfs, in you'll get some interesting times there.

Other spots along the route are more remote from population centers, or are in towns with better infrastructure, where it won;t be such an issue..

Well, first he Earth cooled, and then there were dinosaurs...

But seeing the eclipse was pretty neat. We drove with another family into South Carolina with a 2 1/2 inch refractor telescope that had a solar projection screen, and set up along the path of totality out in the middle of freaking nowhere. We watched the disk of the sun getting blocked out by the moon, and as totality approached and it started to get noticeably dark, the birds started roosting, cows headed for the barn, roosters began to crow...

Seeing the corona blazing around the edges of the moon was amazing, and we saw "Bailey's Beads," where flecks of sunlight shine through passes of mountain ranges along the edge of the lunar disk.

Pictures I took with a small Instamatic camera were disappointing, of course, and just showed a tiny ring in the middle of a black field. I hope to better this time... headed back to SC, as it turns out.

Was reading a news article from Oregon where some little piss-ant burg with one gas station, one diner spotty cell service and basically one road into town thought, a few years ago, that adverttising as being a great place to see the eclipse would be a Great Idea. Based on requests for information about campsites and hotel rooms, they are afraid the population of the town my more than double on Monday, with little infrastructure to cope with it. Overall, based on hotel and campsite bookings, the population of Oregon may increase by 25% on Monday, with all of that increase (and much of the normal population) trying to get into the zone of totality.

Columbia, SC, may also be a zoo.

Other places. not your first or last chance to see the eclipse and further from population centers, may be pretty quiet.

Read somewhere yesterday that about 11 million people live in the zone of totality, estimates for how many people will come into the zone Monday range from 1 to 7 million -- not spread out evenly, but clumped where Interstates come in and some hotels are available.

My hunch is other than a few places that advertised "come see us!" but lack the resources to deal with anybody coming, it will be crowded a bit here and there, but not too bad. Expect backups on the Interstates trying to get in or out, do not leave it to the last minute to get where you want to be, and plan on sitting in some traffic on the way home.

I feel a bit anxious about it desu. Here in Arizona no one cares about it, let alone only a few people that actually know about it. And I've been asking people about it for the last two months. My plan is to drive up to Casper, Wyoming. My worry is that the entire city of Denver is going to flock up there as well and I'll be caught completely off guard. I'm planning on going as prepared as possible, but the numbers expected are frightening.

Part of me thinks that the majority of the American population doesn't give a shit about such things because they either don't understand how amazing it will be or they simply have no interest in anything other than pop culture; thus a very small turnout mostly consisting of science buffs and astrologists.

Another part of me worries that everyone will finally be hearing about it via social media when the weekend begins and make a last minute trip and turn all roadways into parking lots.

Going to be viewing it with shade 12 welding lenses. NASA says it should be good enough, and I couldn't find anything higher nor could I find any of those glasses anywhere near me. You can sort of use two layers of bag (one whole bag). It's not as good as proper eclipse glasses but it's actually in the right spec. I used one ten or so years ago during a partial eclipse.

Pinhole projection is good too. Don't forget to notice the shade from trees; all the little spots of light will become crescents during partial eclipse.

This incredibly useful map allows you to look at the Google maps with an overlay of the eclipse track -- zoom in or out as much as you like, and click any spot on the map and get statistics for the eclipse at that spot, including how long it last, exactly when it starts and ends, if you are in the totality track it tells you that same info for totality.

Will maybe logjam on Monday, but use it for your planning.

I can't seem to find anything that says this is not safe, however my gut is going wtf a lot of people are going to fry their eyeballs listening to this shit. If you want to increases the chances the camera survives, don't point it at the sun for very long. Just short periods like a minute or 2. Then let the camera cool off by pointing it at anything else or covering it with something solid. Alternatively, using any kind of thin filter, or proper filter at all will help. Even sun glasses will help improve the chances the camera survives longer. Don't risk sun glasses on your eyes but why not use it for camera if you already plan on using it anyway

The sun during an eclipse is just the sun -- only partially or fully blocked by the moon, which makes the light coming from it to your lens a bit less.

The eclipse will not fuck up your phone/eye/camera, the sun will. If your camera phone can handle the sun when it is not in eclipse, it can handle it during the eclipse. With one proviso: You don't normally point your phone/camera/eye straight at the sun for minutes at a time.

The danger during an eclipse largely comes from people suddenly wanting to actually LOOK at the sun, pay attention to it, stare at it. Or point a lens at it.

Cover the mirror with a sheet of paper or other opaque stuff, with a small hole in the center. Adjust the mirror so that the thin beam of light shines on a light-colored surface, projecting an image of the sun. It's a variation of the pinhole camera method mentioned elsewhere in the thread.

You are not looking into the beam of light, you look at the image projected on the wall or where-ever.

Note that the sun moves -- you may have to adjust your mirror a bit as the eclipse moves along.

The issue is two fold: the event makes idiots look at the sun a lot more than usual for extended periods. Also, as you get closer to the total eclipse, the low ambient light opens your pupils, allowing the still powerful sunshine to wreck your retina like a magnifying glass does ants.

Your brain and eyes have natural mechanisms to prevent you subconsciously from looking directly at the sun, but with the eclipse, since all the light is in a small isolated sliver, these mechanisms are overridden and you can actually look at the sun directly, even if just for a fraction of a second. This doesn't happen with the normal sun because your brain prevents it.

That's why the eclipse is worse, do not even glance at it even for a second.

I actually have directly looked at the sun a few years ago. It was a cloudy day, enough to block everything but the core disk.

I was convinced that it had to be the moon- I imagined that the sun would be quite a bit bigger back then. Parents told me otherwise. After looking at it for about a minute, my eyes started to burn

So far so good. Vision has held steady since then, optometrist imaged my retina and said they look healthy at latest checkup

Definitely not something I'd try again though. I'll be keeping my glasses on until I can see anything tomorrow

You may be able to see sunspots, there was a line of three pretty decent sized one going around 2 days ago, that should still be there. I was imaging them with a projections from a 2 inch refractor with minimal magnification -- the eyepiece s so old I'm not sure exactly what it was.

Flew 90 minutes and then drove 8 hours to a sketchy motel in South Carolina, going to have to drive 100 miles inland THROUGH Columbia to get to a viewing place with low or negligible chance of thunderstorms. Ffs traffic is going to be so bad
