Has anyone ever considered using the energy density and weight of heavy materials like Uranium in engines of controlled fusion. It seems like with the kinds of energy states in fissile reactions you ought to be able to get some fusion happening.
We do it with bombs at the very least.

How do you expect us to contain a thermonuclear explosion.
They already do that, its called ICF

Actually it's the opposite. Fusion reactors theoretically allow you to use fissile materials more efficiently.

A big issue with nuclear reactors is the huge amount of energy that goes into the fuel as well as the problem of nuclear waste. Spent nuclear fuel can be used in hybrid reactors until completely depleted, so it would simultaneously increase the return on refining isotopes and be a nuclear waste disposal method.
