Condensed Matter and Materials Physicists assemble!
I'm looking for some tips into which fields should I look into. Currently I'm more hinging into materials. I've got some metal phase transitions work lined up and I'm wondering whether I should focus on something else. What are some interesting things to work on in this field?

First off you need a PhD to get to the interesting things.
Semiconductors are always interesting and always safe for an escape route to industry should the academic route be unworkable. Si is safe as is solar power. IR technology is more exotic as is InP, CMT and other exotic materials but industrial use is less common outside defence contractors.
Superconductors are exciting especially if you get in on a promising project but the risk is simply enormous. The halcyon days of High Tc came to a brutal end, 20 years ago. It still is pretty dead.
Nano technology is hot. High risk but if you are young I'd say go for it.
