Out of interest i want people on here to give me their own functional definition of the brain: whats its function? What does it do and why im relation to the rest of the organism? Go!
>>
>>9083370
In relation*
>>
Controls motor function to optimize chances of survival and reproduction.

Depending on your definition of brain, you could also throw some hormone regulation in there as well.
>>
>>9083379
Cant u say it in one sentemce qith one function though?
>>
>>9083379
I have issue that you mention motor function as that phrase is very specialised in the brain and it begs the question of visio n. Maybe more abstract
>>
>>9083475
The "brain" is actually multiple organs with distinct and different functions that are all located in the head. Any single function you could name would be inaccurate.
>>
>>9083483
Well then define motor function for me. You do understand. I just want a less neuroscience way of saying it. I want a life way. Translate it to me as if we were talking about an ameoba

Brain: whats its function?

>>9083483
>Any single function you could name would be inaccurate.
I would say: Cognition, Control & Decision making.
(1) Cognition / Thinking
Sense, Learn, Store & Process Data/ Information
>
(2) Control / Coordination
Control the Body's Organs. Coordinate, Regulate & Synchronize organs to keep the whole organism alive & functioning.
>
(3) Decision Making.
Make decisions to make Life better & easier. For survival (keep alive), achieve goals, desires, motivation for improvement, seek procreation (continuity of species), etc.
>>
I don't know.
The long-time goal of the human brain--to produce and process memes--has already been met.
Imagine you're a senile centennial tortoise on an island and wake up one day to realize that your species are not only the apex predator of the island, they are also all your offspring.

What left is there for you to do? Nobody knows.

If you said the brain was for Cognition and thinking, that excludes its function releasing various chemicals that control growth. The hormones released by the brain are vital. It also leaves out the automatic unthinking processes like heartbeat.

Control and Coordination is a pretty decent overview of its function, but the brain can do a lot of tasks which are unrelated to those things, such as abstract thought and philosophizing. Working out a complex math problem in your head is hardly an act of control and coordination, unless you want to pull some argument about the brain controlling itself.

Decision making, again, leaves out the role of hormones and automatic processes.

i said one function...
>>
>>9083514
would you say maybe the function of the brain is to coordinate environmental interaction with homeostasis?

>Controls motor function to optimize chances of survival and reproduction.
From Wikipedia: The function of the brain is to provide coherent control over the actions of an animal.
>Information from the sense organs is collected in the brain. There it is used to determine what actions the organism is to take. The brain processes the raw data to extract information about the structure of the environment. Next it combines the processed information with information about the current needs of the animal and with memory of past circumstances. Finally, on the basis of the results, it generates motor response patterns. These signal-processing tasks require intricate interplay between a variety of functional subsystems.
>The function of the brain is to provide coherent control over the actions of an animal. A centralized brain allows groups of muscles to be co-activated in complex patterns; it also allows stimuli impinging on one part of the body to evoke responses in other parts, and it can prevent different parts of the body from acting at cross-purposes to each other

>>9083623
so what does a brain do in your own words?
>>
>>9083623
i want a short description
>>
>>9083482
Vision only exists in service of motor function.
>>
>>9083655
so whats your view of the brain> enactivism?
>>
>>9083370
lets change the question abit then since everyones so smart. what does the neocortex do?

it's your bodies fascist leader
