What is it, that engineers actually do?? Serious question, all

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

What is it, that engineers actually do?? Serious question, all of the electrical engineers I've met believe in immediate and widespread solar for America (lol)

Car engines are all ancient designs, so are the chassis's etc (Google Volkswagen modular chassis)

Aircraft are f35 tier, as in total jokes. Money raising jokes, not; 'lets build a fucking sick jet with lasers and extra guns'

The mechanical believe in Prius cars being a good idea, again.. wtf.

And the last civil engineer I met basically project managed in construction. No design, no innovation, no nothing. Seriously, you could just learn that shit on the job.

Half of the degrees also seem like complete memes, such as Environmental Engineering and Aerospace.

This isn't even getting to the tons of engineers who live in the middle of nowhere and basically act as a floor manager in a factory, or just draw pipe/pump schematics all day.

And working in an office has got to be one of the most monotonous, soul-crushing experiences in life.

Seriously, it seems like engineering and most engineering jobs are total trash. Did engineering undergrad for a while, so glad I became applied math master race.

Structural engineer here.

I know we're considered the retarded cousins of 'real' engineers, but OP, you're more retarded than we could ever hope to be.

I hope that I helped with your thread.

>doesn't know what he is talking about

I design things and have my field staff bitches monitor the construction so that I know it gets done the way I told them to.

I'm a field civil engineer with my uncle's firm. I count studs and make sure the foreman mixes the correct proportions of gravel and sand. I don't even care I make $50k a year. Job fulfillment is a meme most engineering jobs are basically sinecure positions.

wtf that's what EIT's are for. if you aint a PE you don't get to call yourself an engineer.

Not him, but I envy you guys.

Here in the UK, anyone can call themselves an engineer. It's not illegal and it's not a protected title.

Really pisses me off

>what do you do anon
>I'm an engineer
>oh cool, maybe you can come round and change my brake pads next week, I'll treat you to a beer.

bruh I design buildings.

I'm an electrical engineer, specialized in embedded software. I mostly write code for peripherals and other low-level OS functions, sometimes i also do some light circuit design and hardware description stuff (VHDL).
Most of the stuff isn't groundbreaking, it's more about customizing and optimizing existing code for a new board, which is itself a variant of another board.
In all the "old" design you mentioned, theres probably minor improvements done from generations to generations. Usually there's no real groundbreaking stuff going on in aeronautical, automotive and civil engineering because of the certifications you need to get and the length of the process plus the weigth of the hierarchy means change takes a long fucking time.
For example, most aircrafts are still running with 70s-80s electronics...

So you could have basically had a major in CS or CE and be doing the same shit.

wow

How well do they pay in embedded? Is there more competition than in other EE positions?

They do nothing. Engineers are the biggest meme of the modern world
>>
>>9084075
CS no, because they probably don't have enough circuit design classes
CE is very similar, yeah. That doesn't really bother me.

>>9084142
I'm not in the US/UK so that may vary, but the starting wage is pretty good (2k€/month). There's a bit of competition with software engineers who are switching fields but there's also enough job offers to not really have to worry about it. I don't really know about the other specialities but it seems to me there's less struggle to get a job when you graduate.
>>
>>9082616
I'm a civil engineer and I design water drainage systems. It's fine. But I do actually do stuff of importance.
>>
If there is a $100 million industry for a piece of mining equipment and an engineer figures out how to make it 1% more efficient they are worth $1 million.

Most scientists don't understand economics, it is why they are all commies.

MSc minimum, PhD is recommended.
