Why is fear-disgust of arthropods cross-culturally present in humans? What evolutionary pressure could create this response?

Look at that thing. Objectively it's fuckin scary.
>>
>>9081084
its not

Yeah but it's objectively harmless to us. This thing poses zero threat to us. Yet we're viscerally afraid of it.

Why?
>>

id imagine association with disease, especially when you see them on your food leftovers. They also trigger a very discerning response from their movements on your skin, so seeing those movements immediately causes you to think what that feels like.

There may also be a pressure emerging from the reality that arthropods are often venomous. Their small stature deceptively makes them look weak, and our programming might be prepared to acknowledge that such is not necessarily so, especially in a prehistoric setting where elaborate taxonomy is not something we had yet

>Why is fear-disgust of arthropods cross-culturally present in humans?
actually the emotions of fear and disgust are not cross-culturally present in humans. because they are concepts ascribed to a certain emotion in a certain context and not actual emotions in themselves
>>
>>9081084
Predator and parasite/disease avoidance. Same reason that children hate sick people.
>>
>>9081092
Not quite. Their bites are rather painful. Additionally, I'm sure some species, especially in the past, were venomous.

Additionally, there is a weariness to insects in general. We're not too good at distinguishing one from another without using collected data, which we have really only had for a few hundred years.

>weariness
wariness.

It isn't.

>We're not too good at distinguishing one from another without using collected data, which we have really only had for a few hundred years.
this isnt true and anyone who has studied traditional ecological knowledge in minor detail should know that. People living a traditional life typically have more general knowledge about the living world around them than anyone else. For reasons that should be obvious. We are innately good at pattern recognition

When we didn't have medicine, a bite from moderately venomous critters would either kill us, or fuck us up through infection, etc. enough to indirectly cause death, when we were hunter/gatherers, so it makes sense to be creeped the fuck out by them.
>>
>>9081084
Insects in general provoke an avoidance response. There are many types, they're small, and it's difficult to determine the nature of its mind and body. Will it bite? Is it poisonous? What does it do? What does it want? How does it think? All unknown. This is the case for most species, but the heuristic is seemingly based around small things.

The one you posted is cute and has long little antennas, but others are clearly spindly and have many legs, and fuck. Don't want all those legs on me. There are too many. I wouldn't want anything with too many legs on me. There is a certain point where there are too many legs.
>>
>>9081084
It's not, people are weak and taught to fear them. I have never feared or felt disgust toward them. Reminder that most "feelings" are cultural products, not innate.
