Hi /sci/,

So I live in St. Louis, and the solar eclipse will be heading closeby. I want to find the best spot to go to for viewing it.

I've looked on google maps overlayed with the path of the eclipse.

My question is, are the more dramatic effects the closer you get to the dead center, aka blue line on the map?

Or are the effects the same anywhere within the two red lines, and the only difference is the time spent in totality?

Thanks /sci/.

The dark area is the path of totality, so you would see a total eclipse anywhere on that area. During the total eclipse the Moon has a larger apparent diameter then the Sun, that's why the eclipse can be total in a whole area and not just one point. In the red lines the Sun would be completely blocked by the Moon, but just barely and for a shorter time, while in the blue line the duration of the eclipse is maximum and the center of the Moon and the Sun coincide for a moment. I'm not and expert, so this may not be completely accurate.

Anywhere in the red you will see the great things totality brings. The difference between the edges and the blue line will merely be the duration. Being that the maximum totality of this eclipse is only 2:40 id highly suggest making as much effort as possible to get to that blue line.
