Yes, you can. However, for things very far away, you can't be sure you're in line with it and 10 steps might be too small an angle to measure accurately, so your distance could be off by a lot.

It works fine for judging distances of a few hundred feet though.

I was thinking for bigger measurements walk to a 45 degree to make it an easy triangle to solve. Line of sight is definitely an issue though. Also the bigger the steps the harder it is to make a right angle with your line.

Willing to experiment and check with Google Maps or something

Looks that way. I didn't realize this until I started looking around but surveying looks way out of my caliber for just dicking around with measurements.
