ITT: post yfw you turn in your thesis or dissertation
i'll start let's go lads 80 pages and 3 publications later my master's shit is done
>>9060423
What was it on?
>>9060426
Yes. Please tell, OPM
>>9060426
Gene expression in generalist insects
Gene expression plasticity across hosts in an invasive scale insect, comparitive genomics study on number of detoxification genes expressed in relation to diet breadth, and an experimental evolution study on how to evolve increased or decreased diet breadth through selecting on gene expression patterns in certain lines of aphids
But who the fk cares I'm going to do frog genomics in a biology department now for phd instead of gay ass insects in an entomology department
>>9060423
Cool. Do you have a job lined up?
>le hard science OP
>>9061138
no, I'm >>9060445
doing PHD
WHY IS THERE NO CELEBRATION GOING ON IN THE THREAD
>>9060445
>biology
>>9061250
Congrats bro. I'm a year into my PhD, looking forward to the day I turn in my thesis. Where are you studying?
Congrats, anon!
>>9061261
Genetics is not some gay shit like ecology.
>>9060445
so, was it hard? I fear I'm too much of a brainlet to go for a masters
>>9062134
>think I made a contribution
I know I probably didn't, but it got published and I got my masters out of the way so fuck you, thats the point of this thread you turd. We even acknowledge all the flaws of these kinds of studies. Also, if "omics" assays don't provide any relevant biological information, what does? People use them for so many facets of science including medicine, so are they all completely worthless?
>>9062078
It was hard, but moreso to do with the workload than being smart. I had to learn a lot of coding and statistics though, so take that as you will

Thanks mang. I'll be going to UCF in Orlando, where I'm from to be closer to parents while I do genomics
Was a lot of it theory based? What sort of equipment did you use? Pictures of lab? How long from submitting to publication in journal? Solo work or part of a team? Congrats!
>>9062330
>Was a lot of it theory based?
Well the last two publications were pretty theory based. The comparative genomics study is based on an idea that the expansion of gene families can lead to functional diversification in those genes, as it would relax selective pressure on redundant genes and perhaps allow insects to gain functions to eat more plants
The second one about experimental evolution is super theoretical, and basically based on the idea that somehow we can select for broadening or shortening of diets by selecting for increased or decreased performance across hosts, and that it is correlated with plasticity in gene expression. It might actually be a terrible idea
>What sort of equipment did you use?
Mostly my computer, linking to a supercomputer cluster for the genomics work. I used some chemicals and trizol to isolate RNA from some insects, and slide mounting materials to make slides. Entomology yayyy
>How long from submitting to publication in journal?
The gene expression study was around two months from submitting to publication, had one round of revisions. Still waiting to hear back on the others
> Solo work or part of a team?
Mostly me and my professor, but we also had a few collaborators on the first paper, and my committee members helped me design the experimental evolution study
Here is a picture of the lab from when I lived there overnight because my lease ran out. I wheeled in a giant TV from the other room the department uses and played bloodborne on it was sweet

Nice setup. Is the plan to continue working in research, could you transition into other areas such as human genetics?
>>9062421
I'm going to try and go into academia, but I am up for going into industries such as bioinformatics for medicine, big data management, or working on genomics for other reasons people would pay me for
