If you buy into the standard interpretations then apes remained in their native jungles after the climate change which resulted in african grasslands (I can't spell savana). This meant they were not selected for upright posture for predator avoidance and thus were not as free to use their hands to carry,grab, manipulate leading to further selective pressure on intelligence.

If you buy the alternative aqua ape theory, however, it is because apes did not go through the aquatic period that hominids did resulting in the supportive liquid environment which aided transition to bipedalism as has occured in proboscis monkey.
