It's becoming fairly common. The collaboration that discovered the Weyl Semimetal TaAs a few years ago did the exact same thing. The way it was told to me, a post-doc in the lab determined from first principles the structure that would host the Weyl fermions, then they basically looked up in a catalog which elements fit their prescription, and got someone to make the material. It's cool shit.
