is there any sort of study behind mental exhaustion? i've been studying for a 3 hour long test by doing problem sets. the questions themselves are trivial, but after i finish even a single section i just want to turn my brain off.

Maybe you should focus on something else
Like seriously, if you study for an hour or two stop it and play video games or watch a show or shitpost for a few minutes. Once you get back, you'll feel refreshed as fuck. Just make sure you get back, otherwise it'll just plain old never get done. Which reminds me

was right. if you have something you enjoy doing do it for awhile. if you're still tired then its because of real fatigue, so get some sleep or take some stims
Read up on the literature of work and leisure, OP. A good rule of thumb: Performance decreases 0.1% per minute of work and increases 1% per minute of leisure. This is why optimum productivity for most people requires 10% of a working period be devoted to rest, and why the Pomodoro technique is effective.
