>>
>>9034867
I don't know Physics department so well, aside from the pamphlet. Our friend and physics chair Art McDonald won the Nobel Prize in 2015 for his work at SNOLAB on neutrino oscillation. A number of physics faculty are FRSC members also. The most direct experience I have with Physics is the Engineering Physics program, which is jointly run between the Mechanical Engineering department and the Physics and Astronomy department. Those students are extremely strong, and I think the rate at which they are placed into graduate programs upon graduation is in the 70% range.

I went there because, in my field, the top lab in the country is there.

Kingston is... fine. Its not great, its not bad. Housing is pretty competative, and lots of rich kids partying all the time (and the nightlife is 100% centred around Queen's undergrads in the worst sense). But its a quick and cheap trip to Toronto or Ottawa or Montreal for whatever culture you'd like to see (be that music festivals or museums or so on). Good restaurants, a few events a year worth seeing, very walkable. Kingston's fine, but that's about the best praise I can give it.
>>
>>9034899
somewhat surprised that the lab isn't at toronto mcgill ubc or waterloo, but i guess anything's possible.

i'm at mcgill myself. doing a phd, but haven't earned it yet.

also i've identified you. why would you post that stuff online here? do you really need that validation from anons? also you're an assistant prof... you have a phd, you have money, you probably have friends... why are you still here?

On top of that, I review plans, calculations, and field work of every single engineering project that goes on in the city by private firms and make sure they adhere to city standards.

Municipalities like this are pretty slow, a lot of slogging through paperwork sometimes, but ultimately very stable. Compare that to working at a private engineering firm, where you're constantly incredibly busy but can be fired for the smallest little reason.

>>9038400
Yeah I'm not sure why they pay so much at this uni, but the other uni in the country I applied to was similar pay. Still have to pay tuition (600 a semester), rent, food, etc in a high cost of living. They also increase salary every year you study until 3rd year where it stays same until you're done. Looking at the salary table they have, at the best rate salary in your 3rd year the pay is $80k. I'm not sure why or when they raise your rate, but I have more than enough at them moment.

Yeah, Europe is pretty bad, especially outside of Germany. Why not work in the USA? I'm not born in the USA either (but in a western white country too).

Keep in mind there's vested stock + bonus too on top of that base pay.

Although on the other hand I pay $1300/mo in rent, whereas I'm sure you're paying less in Europe. I probably spend about $1500/mo max total (get 3 meals/day from work, so my food budget is low as hell).

>>
>>9036043
I'm probably not the same anon. I don't come here very often, and when I do, I stick to the math general. I do work a lot on cryptographic protocols, and not at all on distributed systems.

I got this job through a recommendation from a colleague in my research lab. After my comp sci undergrad, I started a master's program with thesis. I joined a research lab that focused on malware analysis and sandboxing. There were several companies trying to accomplish the same thing. Most of my research lab, after graduating, ended up going to one of two companies. Those companies were trying to use sandboxing techniques for enterprise use cases, which happened to align very closely to my lab's work. One of those colleagues/friends planned to recruit me as soon as I graduated, which is how I got the job.

I spent a lot of time working with a lot of teams get their code secure enough to satisfy both the security team and upper management. Whenever I found an issue, I made sure other people were aware of it, and I worked with the teams to get a reasonable solution out. I also spent a lot of time doing my work carefully to avoid getting blamed for issues. It helped me get a lot of trust from software developers and managers, so they would seek me out early on when designing new features and products. I did the same with people from the product management team, so they would seek me out when coming up with new features and products.

There are very few people at my company that came in specifically to do software architecture. The ones that did ended up becoming regular managers of software teams. At least in my company, I don't think there is a concrete path for getting to software architecture. You need to get everyone else's trust to do that.

So learn about security, get into a research lab doing worthwhile work, make friends with PhDs and other researchers, and when you get a job, work with software developers, managers, and product managers to get their trust.

Quick question, how did you get into uni without a high school diploma? Don't you need some math prerequisites to get into CS?

I'm this >>9039139 and I want to study CS to hopefully get an okay job (like 50K hopefully) but I don't have any mathematical background or anything.
>>
>>9039151

I'm not him but I think he's saying he has his highschool diploma and that's it, but in 1 semester he will have his CS/Math bachelors degree.

Also if you have a law degree, why don't you have a good job in law-related stuff? Google says the starting salary is like 80k for a masters in law.

Since you already have a graduate degree, then there's not too much of a point in getting a CS degree. Just learn to code in your free time. Most of the mathy stuff in a CS degree isn't needed for 95% of software jobs. Save yourself the time/money. I say this as >>9037519 as well. Most of what I know for programming I learned on my own. School was about learning the theory behind it, which I pretty much never use at work. Just make sure you learn your algorithms/datastructures (check out CLRS - Introduction to Algorithms for a comprehensive beginner's textbook, which should be enough).
>>
>>9039360

The thing is I've never had a job before, and I can't work as a lawyer or notary where I live until I get an internship, and every single firm has denied me an internship because I never worked before, and because I seem too introvert and unable to communicate. So essentially I can't really find a job... and I don't know what to do. Based on how I am right now, my best job opportunities are in retail.

It's not pharmacy, by pharma I meant big pharma, there's no clinical aspect or patient facing work whatsoever at my job. It's a pharmaceutical company, or really a medical device company, so I work in a quality assurance lab for a manufacturing plant with mostly blue collar people.

I don't appreciate being called pathetic, that's actually more than most people I know get at entry-level with similar background and just a bachelor's. My other options were some kind of clinical diagnostic lab or research at a university, which usually pays half to a third of that if you're lucky. Bench scientists make shit, I don't know what you've heard. Also, the region I live in generally sees lower salaries, but also has a low cost of living. Did not expect this thread to still be alive.

Anyway, a lot of it has to do with the freedom to set your own goals. Academics complain (and I know I do) about publish-or-perish and the student class-evaluation methods, but I don't think its anywhere near as restrictive as industry. You take a pay-cut for that freedom.

The standard in most Departments is a 40-30-30 split for research, teaching, and service. Service can be academic (editing a journal), administrative (being a graduate coordinator), or a community thing. But tenure-track faculty are expected to do both.

Typical desk job, but I get to analyze data. I work with my state's trauma registry, so I also do technical assistance for the hospitals that actually enter the data into the registry. Not every data analyst job has that component of having some sway over the data quality. I enjoy that portion in small amounts.

Most of my time is spent analyzing data from the trauma registry. My analysis is mostly based on request. Some people have general ideas of what they're looking for (e.g. show me some gunshot wound data) and I extract raw data from the registry (similar to pulling data via SQL but not as nice), pull it into R (definitely use rstudio if you're not already), clean the data, calculate some summary statistics, and make some pretty graphs (which is why I use R as opposed to Python which used to have ugly graphics, but I still prefer R). If there are specific requests, I find the numbers, get them delivered in their desired format, and sometimes provide updates at regular intervals (e.g. quarterly data for how many hospitals are in compliance with registry data entry).

Not sure how exciting that sounds, but I love it. The big project I'm working on now takes data from our trauma registry, calculates each of the hospitals' results for 21 measures (e.g. how quickly are trauma surgeons responding to trauma alerts), and compares that with the state as a whole as well as hospitals of the same trauma level/level of care. I essentially create a list of data frames – one for each hospital – create an excel file for each hospital from that list, and send emails out to each hospital with their excel file attached. All of this is done in R except the data pull. The data pull could be done in R if the data was on a SQL server, which most companies would have, but our funding at the state doesn't allow that. It was fun creating the program, and it is very impressive to the nontechnical people.

I'm glad we've moved past the "i'm so cool and edgy and I don't care because money" phase of the response to actual justification.
The cool thing about peace and stability through strength is that we all get to do it at the same time so all countries can continue pouring money into researching how to most efficiently kill people in other countries until the end of time and this will never be a problem. It's like a big game "who can kill the best". When America wins it'll be great because we'll never use our strength for evil.

You're a gravedigger; you were thrust into an imperfect world that you can't change, and for our survival you have to contribute to a terrible system. Your job might be necessary, but it isn't inspiring. It's fucking disgusting.

Recreation, food, clothing (i need a winter wardrobe as i come from somewhere without one), random school accessories (i need to build a computer once im there), a monthly trip to see my sister by train. Basically anything that isnt university related that will help me keep my sanity for 5 years. I also refuse to eat like shit since nutrition very important for me, so no ramen or the like, im planning on cooking often when im up there, and the food i buy is not cheap (but cheaper than eating out)
>>
>>9041537
oh and alcohol too, i probably spend about 1k a year on alcohol
>>
>>9041522
rent? you said 10k for living, isn't that rent? clothing shouldn't be a huge cost per year. Also, just budget food per week and prepare your own? you shouldnt eat out all the time, live within your means. I had a similar pay and traveled to europe every year with savings

exactly what i was looking for, if ill be able to save. during the admit trip i asked all the students if they had taken out loans/if they are poor and starving and they all said they were fine, but yea you never know. The reason im so concerned is im coming from a much higher cost of living city where 22k a year is pretty low, i mean shit i make 15.50 an hour right now at my menial college job.
>>
>>9041537
Idk I don't buy ramen really. I do admittedly have rice and beans occasionally, but only spent like $100 on it at the beginning of the year for a shitload to have in case I forget to go to the store for more food. I don't really drink alcohol, coffee, drugs, etc so maybe if I did it would be a lot worse. I try to budget about $50 a week for fresh food a week. Maybe some times I go a little over when going out to eat, but typically try to keep it at 50 for myself.

Currently at a uni with harsh winters and nice summers, and only spend $1k max on new clothing/shoes per year, most of that maybe on nicer clothing for TA obligations and the like, or dates. I wear more casual clothing when doing research/going to classes and haven't really updated it that much since dropping a few sizes. Typically buy new casual shoes every year, gym shoes pretty old might update those, nice shoes are kept clean and protected so don't buy new ones often. Also just get a nice winter coat and a jacket or two that you can use throughout a few years.

Yeah I also bought a new computer and laptop a bit after I first started because my old one was dated. First year was a little rougher because of that, but I spent $2k max for computer (~$1.5k) and laptop (~$500).

With how much I spent on food, living, etc.. I could have bought a car if I wanted, but desu they are just a hassle when you are a student and just a money sink when you don't really use it too much
Before I left for grad school (lower cost of living to higher), I tried to budget what I would spend on all living, food, books, recreation, etc expenses and tried to aim high on costs, so when the time came I actually had plenty of money to spare and spent that on travel during breaks. Usually when I travel the plane ticket is the biggest cost because I try to visit places with lower costs so it isn't as expensive, but I am also saving money each year so if I wanted I could tap into that and go to more expensive destinations.
>>
>>9041573
>>9041662
Really long post, but I hope it helps you some how. It isn't a lavish life style, but it isn't that bad. I chose to prioritize travelling once or twice a year, so I figured out how much that may cost and adjusted my other expenses accordingly. If you wanted some expensive gourmet food throughout the year you could, but you just have to take some money from other things.
>>
>>9041662
>>9041667
no i really appreciate the long post, lot of really good information there, putting me at ease too. I already have a car with no mechanical issues forseeable, just got 4 new tires as a birthday gift for my parents, im planning on driving it up there and cancelling my insurance and just leaving it in my parking spot (which is included in rent). Im not one to live lavishly at all, but i need to grow up and buy some relatively professional clothes/shoes.

Quick question, what "TA obligations" are you referring to when you say you need nice clothes for it? and what are "nice clothes", your definition? Like i dont have a suit or anything but i have slacks with a couple of nice button downs, but do i need to get a suit and tie?

Rice and beans is a staple for me, my mom is latin, im not at risk of starving due to my cooking skills, but more becoming too lazy to cook, and i dont want that to happen. Also im really not looking forward to a shared kitchen space, which may also hinder cooking.
Ever hook up with one of your students? One of my professor said that was the best part of TAing lol
>>
>>9041690
For "TA obligations" I just meant like when I had to teach a recitation or cover a lecture or two. Typically I would wear button up shirt, nice slacks and shoes. Don't really need a suit for that, but having one or two handy for conferences or more formal events is good. On other days were I would just go to class or work in research lab I would just wear maybe a tshirt, jeans, and comfy shoes. Sometimes I would just show up in gym shorts or sweatpants and no one really cares. I have heard of one friend having to dress more than that, but generally it doesn't matter and just dress comfortably. I only had to TA for one semester (thankfully) and I had a girlfriend at the time so didn't really hookup with anyone. Also I am in electrical engineering so I wouldn't really want to lol.
>>
>>9041740
Oh ok, im slightly worried about TAing, well not really worried as i am clueless about what to do/what will be required of me, but they made if very clearly im not expected to know what im doing and they will train me. Although im supposed to do a small 5 minute Ted style lecture for freshman/sophmores the day of TA orientation, i imagine they just want to see that we can put together a powerpoint and are not autistic and can talk in front of people.
appreciate the advice!

You still interact with people, just less than a normal job. You spend a lot of time working with other devs, so that's kinda cool. I found a couple of dudes that are pretty well versed in the chans and they make the day fly.

I enjoy the challenging stuff, and they do similar but different kinds of projects, so it's fun to just stand around outside and talk about your project issues or whatever and how they would deal with it.

I'm one of the most driven young guys in my area, constantly trying to push us to the bleeding edge of technology and always thinking big and fast. Older people tend to fall into older traps and build their project with blocks they're most comfortable with.
>>
>>9042155
ALSO: I want less of a corporate job I think. The bit about older guys trying to do the things they've always done really makes things difficult. I know that I sound like a stereotypical younger dev, but we shoot ourselves in the foot by trying to always play it "safe" with our tech. that + corporate bureaucracy = slowwwwwww. Things just take forever. You have to really be careful about acquiring bad habits that make you lazy and accepting of long deadlines and slow pace of innovation.

What I've seen is that a couple of things are true: it's really hard to let someone go unless they're egregious, and there are a lot of people that are perfectly fine being mediocre. These two things combined mean that the corporation tends to perform at a mediocre clip, and the best performers hopefully receive the correct amount of recognition. In a corporate culture that errs on the side of caution and tries to make everyone happy, you'll see mediocre performers given tons of recognition for mediocre work, and top performers' work tends to fall to the wayside and they're given mediocre amounts of bonus/raise incentives.

I make it sound terrible, and sometimes it can be, but it's only noticeable at the end of the year when you've reviewed all you've done, and you stack it against a guy that's making more money than you.
>>
>>9041921
Can you tell me more about materials science? I've considered it but I want to know more. Is it a meme and you getting a decent job being the exception to the rule?
>>

>>9042176

Thanks for your answer. I got a masters in law, and with which I can't really do anything, so I thought of retraining myself and going into CS + math or something along those lines, trying to get a slightly better prospects for my future.

I obviously don't know how the corporate structure functions specifically for tech companies, but most companies function the way you describe, because too much innovation has a risk attached to it, and most people aren't daring enough to go for it, and most companies therefore look for people who can do the job, maybe a bit better than the average, to just keep the machine going, but rarely to make it go further, especially if it doesn't have the necessary funds.

I don't mind personally innovation or having to adapt to new things, because I like learning and I tend towards excellency (not saying I am the best, but that I want to be), but I truly lack interpersonal skills, which is a big part as to why I can't do anything with my masters in law. I don't mind having to share work with coworkers, at least I don't mind it too much, but what I mind is working in a team and needing to know personally other people for my work to function and be good. I can't do that, or not very well. I was kind of hoping something in CS would allow me to do things without too much interacting. I'm really awkward. I mean, I've never had a real job before, and I got turned down from all law internships and jobs because of that + being weird at interviews, all that despite my grades, which were good, and I don't really know what to do if I don't want to work on minimum wage forever. I'd like something ideally at 50-60k per year.

All of West Texas is a complete shit hole, no exaggeration. I would never choose to live there or raise a family there.

Working there was probably the best time of my life though. I got to work with a bunch of cool ass rednecks, and every night we'd drink and shoot guns in the camp. It's also was a great resume highlight. Every person I interviewed with after I got laid off asked me about my time there. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

people with well paying jobs, how does money correlates with pussy? because i see a lot of turbo autists on /fit/ who have really good bodies but cant get a gf. what about money?
>>
>>9043174

My first job out of college paid $60k. I basically could have pussy whenever I wanted. The money definitely helped but the girls I was with said (all of which were still in college) said it had more to do with maturity.

my clan leader, who is in risk management in NYC, has legitimately talked about how he ran a clan of 50+ people in runescape when he was 15-18. But when it comes down to it, managing and organizing that many people, acting like an HR department, setting up websites and shit, that shit does translate to real world character. Even though it's a video game, it represents a real drive/enthusiasm for leadership, since there was no pay/compensation involved.

WoW is even more complicated, seriously if someone told me they led a raid clan for years, that shit is basically a full time job
>>
>>9042187
That's something you can improve. If you're capable at the job, and the only issue you have is social awkwardness, you have a leg-up on most people. I can be awkward at times, since I don't enjoy interacting with people outside of the coworker I've been sleeping with for years, along with my aforementioned work buddies, but yeah...

Social awkwardness is not a barrier for programmers. It's pretty much expected.

Hey man I'm graduating next year with Chem E Bs.
What was your gpa and did you have internships?
I have the opportunity to do research with a professor this semester and I'm not sure if it's a waste of time or if it can
somewhat effectively cover up my lack of internship experience.
I made a bad school choice (out of state, state school, no reason to be here) and have to work 25+ hours a week to afford it
so my GPA is only a 3.31.
Am I fucked?
Happy for you, though.
It's good to see another young wigga out here makin bank after slogging through this hellscape of a major.

I had a 3.65, I did two internships with the company I now work for and I did some chemistry research for about two years before that. Research experience will be valuable if you want to apply to grad school, but if not I found that pretty much every industry person I talked to didn't give a shit about it. You absolutely need internships somewhere relevant though especially if your GPA is kind of weak.

I don't mean to scare you and maybe you'll have better luck than I did at job hunting, but I think you better double down on your networking. Start talking to everyone you know and introducing yourself to everyone you can because it sounds like you haven't done yourself any favors, to be honest.

If your in the electrical Union which I'm guessing you are; take advantage of the free classes they let/have you take while doing your apprenticeship. At least where I am (PA) we need to take classes at nearby trade school/community college while pursuing our apprenticeship. If you can, try learning more about controls and/or power distribution, those are both high paying areas besides linemen.

come now man. let's be realistic here.

I am beyond all hope. In 10 years the only thing I would like to do as a career is write music, and there's no money in that. It's a saturated field, to say the least, and I'm bringing (incredible) amateur talent and no schooling.

My goal is to live simply, try to pursue the music thing when I can, purely for the sake of the art and not to be discovered. I am a simple man of simple tastes.

Honestly I'd just be happy for any job I can get. I've heard from industry contacts that entry level jobs have as many as 300 applicants per position, with a consistent roster of 20-30 PhDs applying desperate for work.

GOOD LUCK ANON
>>
>>9051738
Thanks anon.

I would advise to any other anons looking towards a PhD, pick a lab that has a healthy stream of grant money.

As long as you aren't terrible, they will usually be happy to put some money in and keep you employed until you can secure a job/postdoc elsewhere, if not offer you a job outright.

I joined a lab at the end of a funding cycle which didn't necessarily have strong prospects in the next set of grants. Accordingly the second half of my PhD had very little funding and no prospects to remain employed after I finished. I've been able to pick up a little bit of tutoring work and some miscellaneous odd jobs, but it isn't nearly enough to keep things going.

Upward mobility is your friend in overly competitive environments. I came out with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and wound up ditch digging with the TVA, whom I'd heard pays very well, in order to prove my worth before moving up. There's a lot to be learned coming up from the bottom, too, which is a plus if you have any passion for learning.

I'm at 105k a year now in their turbine improvement R&D after 7 years with the company. Just be an asset, and don't turn your nose up when the opportunity arises for you to prove yourself to someone who matters. Doing grunt work can really pay off if you do it well enough to be worth their attention & investment.
