He did really bad in some of his courses when he was doing his masters degree and got rejected by various grad programs. No one is denying he was not talented.

I'm just being realist not cynical or negative. He did bad because he had no formal training, the more training he had the better he did and his talent was always there.
And it would've been all impossible had it not been for meeting Hironaka, who taught him exactly what he had to know about singularity theory in order to prove the Rota conjecture, and who gave him his letter of recommendations that got him accepted into a phd despite his bad grades.
