How do thrusters work in space? What are they pushing against to generate thrust?
>>8991122
Newton's 3rd law of energy and conservation, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Expel gasses in one direction (behind you) and get thrusted in the opposite dirction (forward).
Combustion in the thrusters creates high pressure of gases which pushes on all the surfaces. The gases can only go out the direction that is open (the opposite direction you want to go) because there is less opposing force than the surfaces inside the thrusters. Basically, the expanding gases push the spacecraft forward. The thrusters are not pushing against anything behind the spacecraft because there is virtually no matter to push against.
