It seems to me like consciousness is just a background process of the brain. When the brain is working really hard in a stressful situation, maybe exercising or running away from a predator, there's not really an intelligent higher level consciousness that's actively thinking about math and stuff. Only when you're sitting and relaxed can you do that and really think. You get caught up in daily cycles doing repetitive tasks and only when you sit and stop and break from this, and your brain is no longer being utilized, are you more conscious
What if consciousness is just wasted idle CPU cycles in our brain. An emergent property of our decision-making process that isn't actually important to it
