My best mate is a med student. I dated a med student. They're airtight but their superiority complex is often stronger than normal for students.
>>
my girlfriend is studying for her MCAT. Its funny that she is struggling to understand the concepts after getting straight As so she could get a good transcript. Straight fucking As through all of gen chem, ochem, biochem, physics and bio. Its nothing but rote memorization and sucking up for letters of recommendation.

Honestly, probably because they feel like doctors get a lot of undeserved recognition. This is as opposed to them (I'm assuming math/basic science grad student types) who do a lot of research, but people assume they're just burnout pre-meds. Just my guess
>>
It's because of your noble beginning as a healer and teacher of good health you have transformed into a shill for big pharma and teacher of nothing.
>>
They think they are hotshot even when you make more than them.

Example, I make 510k personal profit for my company, parents know this, friends know this, everyone knows this.
But when a doctor comes along they all compare the doc to me being at a higher level, even though doc here makes less $$$ than me.

Also from when I was in school all the medkids acted holier than thou, even though their shit was easy and I doubt any of them could have finished a degree in engineering or in physics.

Also it does piss me off that rote memorization and 80hours rotation weeks is seemingly special and taken as being extremely difficult.

Idk op, maybe it because I make more than them but they are put on a higher societal scale than me, even though I worked less than they did in a quarter of the time.

Straight up a lot of them are cunts, and when I mention how much money they make, they get all hostile, even the old farts and they start comparing me to them, I usually just bluntly say I make more money than you from going to school for 4 years instead of using up 12 years of my life, also i'm fit as fuck and can fight so I can get away with that shit.

But they are generally fucking cunts m8, wall street boys make fun of them and I like making fun of them even though they act like cunts.
>>
They act like it's the hardest shit in the world and if you see a nurse working a long shift you should kiss their feet as a sign of massive respect for their gracious sacrifice.

Also, Gray's Anatomy put female med-students (90% of them) on a pedestal and they believe every person they treat is a life personally saved, as opposed to the actuality where they are mostly wiping asses and pouring out piss cans and being the doctor's bitch.

ADDITIONALLY, you act like hot shit. You think your field is the only thing that fucking matters when this is just patently false. You generally disregard the merit of other fields of study, circle-jerking each other about how you're going to be such great doctors one day when it is most likely the case that you'll all end up as washed up with little to no real accomplishments.

Sure doctors and nurses provide a noble service to the world, but you are not the greatest people in the world. Also to anyone who is planning on being a simple general practitioner, you will be replaced by machines.

Most people don't understand return on investment. While being a med student provides horrifyingly terrible ROI until you are at least 40, most people get meme'd by the insane money making ability and prestige of being a doctor once you are about 45+

The degrees that have best immeadiate ROI are probably finance, applied math degrees (if you become an actuary or absolutely anything that is in finance), and Engineering. Engineering has slow wage growth so you have to go become a consultant or manage other engis to actually make a lot of money as opposed to a slow crawl from middle class to upper-middle class, finance and by extension their applied math buddies don't have to worry about this.

Meh, I'd contest that lab skills can be self taught. Procuring lab materials is much more difficult for a civilian than getting what is necessary to learn math/computer science (i.e. excellent textbooks [Most of the classic books are available online] and a computer made post 2010)

>>
>>8934276

I TA'd a bunch of chem labs and the students that kept haggling over 1-2 points on a lab report were invariably pre-meds. Very annoying when the paper is already >95/100.

>Nurses think their job is "complicated"

>>
>>8936214
>kept haggling over 1-2 points on a lab report

That's just basic survival skill. Those 1-2 points might seem like nothing to you but in medical school, where everyone will be smart and get like 95% grades, those measly 2 points might represent the difference between matching into radiology or family medicine. People will literally do anything for those points. In my experience medical school was a sociopath breeding ground. People worked not only to increase their grades but to put classmates down. One woman arrived early, hid the patient charts from the rest of us and then told us the class had been canceled to make go home.

Just give them the points and they'll go away quickly and leave you alone. Take solace in the fact medical school will turn their lives into hell and make unpaid hospital slaves out of them. They will work more hours than they're legally allowed to with zero recourse.

>Ahahaha I say if you're insane, sick, dumb and charge you 75$ for a check up.
>If I'm a real asshole I'll "accidentally" mess up the dosage and then call the guards pr sue if you dare fight back.

I don't know about your doctors and med assistants, but the ones from my country are complete psychopaths. They can't feel, care, judge, respect their patients despite being much dumber than the patient.

The med job makes you a natural unfeeling retard and you don't need intelligence compared to knowledge.
So you end up being a bitter idiot or a power hungry idiot who knows them all, but can't apply that knowledge in an intelligent and morally correct manner to save their own lives.

If I ever, ever become president of any country. I am treating all doctors like shit and coercing them into being submissive.
Doctors and assistants would be objectively chosen on their benevolence and humble traits found in their brain.
A patient would sue them for the simplest stuff. A doctor calling a cop inside a hospital would be illegal. A doctor writing official letters like "he's insane, he can't exit himself, he takes the pills and stays here as much as I tell him" no, no more bullshit power tripping for these smug gore-loving, drug-enabling autists.

You ever saw a confident submissive doctor that doesn't prioritize his coffee over you or his snarky remarks? I didn't. It's like MASH, but without the "lol I'm naturally good at this so shut up". No the medical area has become school/politics/prison/religion 101. Everyone is an asshole, a power obsessed freak, a pseudo intellectual, a morally incorrect sociopath, a communist.
And the environment they operate in is just disgusting. Hasn't anyone thought of keeping the medicine in a void space so it doesn't smell like acid? Or not painting the walls white?

Doctors, fuck 85% of them.

It starts with pre-meds. They haven't really done shit besides saying they're "pre-med", and yet they think that they're smarter and work harder and have more rigorous course loads than anyone else. And, of course, they love telling everyone all of these things.

When they get in the first two years of med school, they're even more insufferable. The same applies, but now they're also in med school so their egos are absolutely out of control. It takes until their third or fourth years of med school for them to be beaten down in their rotations to get some sense after having smoke blown up their asses for the last however many years.

Scrolled through to provide my opinions. I was a TA while studying for my MS and PhD in statistics. I will first say that it is not only premeds but also nursing students.

In the USA, admission to nursing BSN programs and med school are fierce. So students do everything they can to get at least 1 point higher than everyone else in the class, just to increase their chance of acceptance.

I have had to TA (teach, just run quizzes/exams by the professor before giving them) basic and intermediate statistics (no calculus required) almost every semester, and it's the same shit everytime.

>be me
>AFUCKINGWHITEMALE.png
>give quiz/exam
>post solutions on blackboard afterwards
>grading rubric is very clear and lenient
>fuckers are banging down my office door before I have even started grading
>literally15minsafterthetestWTF.gif
>fuckers start begging for extra points
>won't gtfo after telling them I won't grade until later
>start complaining about my "privileged" class
>blah blah blah

Then at the end of the semester these fuckwits are begging for extra credit, even though syllabus says no. Email blowing up, banging on my office door like a SWAT raid, etc.

It's mentally exhausting, and don't even get me started on the cheating!

Pre-meds can be chill, but the ones that aren't push one of /sci/'s buttons by being intellectually insincere or by having "impure" intentions.

One thing repeated a lot in this thread is haggling for that one extra point. While this is obnoxious in its own right, if they deserve the points they should get them. The part that upsets /sci/ is that this behavior indicates that they aren't in the class to learn the material, but to get a piece of paper that says they know it.

/sci/ is in the class because the material interests them. /sci/ wants to make a career out of what they're studying, so the pursuit of the discipline becomes something personal to them. When /sci/ sees someone who doesn't seem to care for the discipline (chemistry, math, biology, etc) presume to be one of the best because some test scores, they see something they have personal attachment to being turned into a game.

Others have mentioned dishonesty: that pre-meds are in it for the money. To a lesser extent, I feel upset by the opposite extreme as well: being in pre-med ONLY because they want to help others. While I find this reason morally sound and I admire their pursuit of justice, you often find pre-meds who just don't belong in science and shit-up classes because of it. These ones beg for extra credit and feel entitled to it because they're going to use it as a means to pursue their morally sound goal. My problem with this is that I don't think intention is enough and that it still doesn't show a respect for the discipline /sci/ respects.

isn't this just integration?

Because of shit like:

>I don't like med
>"You are just envy!!!!!!!1111!!!!!!!!"
>"I earn 400k year and I lo0ve my job!!!!111"

Fuck off med students why do you think everyone is envy

This part winds me up so fucking much, my AS bio and chem classes were full of fuckers like these that couldn't comprehend even the simplest reaction mechanisms like free radical substitution and electrophillic addition

Why would anyone want to be a doctor? I don't get it. It seems like an absolutely horrible job, you essentially work in a sewer, when you are accidentally not killing your patents you are learning about how other doctors accidentally didn't kill their patients. You are a bitch to the pharmaceutical companies who grease your worn out signature writing hand with a new camera or some shit so that you shovel their sugar pills.
Long shifts, bad working conditions, having to spend a lot of your time off still learning how to not kill someone.
Only the most intelligent retards become doctors.

Social prestige, money, some people might actually like it even though you don't (I know it sounds weird).
>>

>some people might actually like it even though you don't (I know it sounds weird).
Impossible
>>
Because very few of them actually want to help, and most just want to make money or have the recognition of being a doctor (I'm convinced it's recognition moreso than money, although money is a close second). A friend of mine got into med school and I can't talk to him without him bringing up medical school or some aspect of life that relates to it every 5 minutes ("whoa I have to think about getting an apartment, whoa I have to give up my social life, whoa I'm gonna be doing nothing but studying, whoa this is gonna be the rest of my life, whoa what about MD/PhD" etc). I'm happy that his hard work paid off but sweet Christ we know you're going to med school.

If there was some universal rule that premeds or med students couldn't talk about trying to go to or going to med school nobody would be premed, nobody would go to med school. They just love to hear themselves gush about it.

Also a lot of them seem holier-than-thou. Not to mention they continually shit up chemistry courses because they can't into listening or applying knowledge and logic to questions and answers they didn't memorize in advance. They can't just read the material or listen to figure things out for themselves--it has to be spelled out for them explicitly.

>t. went to premed-centric undergrad as a non-premed

you fucks are insufferable

Wow the insecurity in this thread is so thick I can chew it.

Kek. This is a lie. There are of course such people, but the majority go for the money and prestige. Also by the time you're fully trained all that naive bullshit is out of your head. It's not a coincidence medics have one of the most cynical, dark and edgy professional humor out there. Source: both parents are doctors.

I'm a 2nd year medical student in the UK coming up to my end of year exams. The in school competition isn't that bad here compared to the US but getting in was very competitive.

Once you're in it's kind of like the less you care about medicine the cooler you are. Everyone despises medics that only talk about medicine things so looking unassuming by being a scruffy bastard who gets smashed weekly seems like the aim of most fellow medics.

Everyone is so fake though with how they talk to you. They are all extraverted and really outgoing which is really uncomfortable in social situations as you have no idea about peoples actual opinions of you. This makes the class very cliquey and everyone bitches behind peoples backs.

It's also a well incestuous course, any girl you talk to has either been with another medical student you know or has a long term significant other.

Everyone says they came into medicine to help people and all that bullshit but I highly doubt this.
>>
A Nordic med homo here, 4 out of 6 years completed today. Studied chemistry for two years before passing the admission test.

I don't think the rote memorization is actually a thing (maybe in America, no idea). Much easier to remember and understand things as parts of the huge messy system that the human body is.

Also, many of the other students are annoyingly good in everything, they socialize, travel the world, attend all sorts of activities, study hard and ace the tests, have healthy personal relationships etc etc. They seem almost superhuman. Again not all of them are like this but a major part anyway.

Of course the shy greasy-haired STEM majors are envious to the demigods that seem to have it all.

>>8933716
This is generally true.

>being a med student in UK in 2017

>>
>>8933662
This is a silly discussion. Dare I say "spectrum"? Some med students are no more intelligent than needed to become a podiatrist. Others do additional degrees, such as physics, to participate in areas such as nuclear medicine. It is true, however, that once you're accepted to med school you're set - unless you fuck up egregiously they'll push you through to your degree.

It's 100% envy. Well and the fact that premed students are such shits. I say this as one.
>>
>>8944297
Envy of what? Most natural sciences and a lot of tech are much harder to get in and stay than meme school.
>>
>>8944297
You lurk /sci/ enough and you notice a pattern. People here hate engineers, comp sci majors, and doctors ostensibly because their fields aren't "pure" but also because the compensation and respect a scientist or mathematician gets is generally shit in comparison to what you can expect to get by going into one of those fields. Working in academia is all of the rigor of med school with none of the financial payoff or security.

Don't take that to mean that I think of math or science as a somehow "less noble" endeavor than medicine. I have the highest respect for math and science students.

Also that's just not true, at least not in the United States. There is no type of graduate school that is even remotely as difficult to get into as a US allopathic medical school. Not law school, nursing school, PA school, nothing compares.
>>
>>8944447
Getting in is one thing staying is another. Here in Germany medicine has insane entry barriers, but if you're in then you're guaranteed a place unless you completely fuck it up and drop out. This is a personal opinion of course, but I'd say math and physics are generally harder subjects to study and excel in and if you don't excel then nothing will come to you unlike in medicine. Anyways, not looking to meme contrarianisms and measure dicks. I wasn't insane enough to go into academia, so I'm not really mad at or jealous of doctors - that was my point.
>>
>>8944504
I don't know much about what grad school for math and physics is like, but you're probably right. Seems like you have to show a lot more initiative and passion for the subject to do well in those subjects, whereas with med school there's a lot of work but it's pretty on rails, there's never any confusion about what it is you need to do.
>>
Fuck all the retards that talk shit on computer science, won't be laughing when we automate your stupid pointless jobs and whipe our asses with your pointless degrees. By the way programming isn't computer science it's a part of it so have fun with your shitty degrees while you can or join the dark side and help end the world hahah

With that attitude anyone would get mad at you, med student or not. You're not a better person because you make more money. You're probably the kind of person that would fire a woman on the spot if she gets pregnant, instead of giving her maternity leave.
Besides, you're basically saying they invest 80 hours into studying per week, but somehow their degree isn't difficult. Guess what genius, anyone can get a degree in engineering or mathematics too if they invest 80 fucking hours. With that level of dedication (that an engineering student doesn't have btw), they could become anything. And they choose to become doctors and save lives. Maybe your friends and family aren't so shallow to judge people by how much money they make

I honestly respect actual coders more than anything, because programming is too broad to define and programmers are autists that have to work with other autisits. but what universities push through is essentially their best guess at what a coder should be. they produce IT guys. True computer scientists are always self-taught.

>Is it envy?
This. This is why we hate medical students.
