The acccepted theory on why africa still has mega fauna yet they went extinct everywhere else was thet they coevolved with humans and thus evolved mechanisms to avoid being hunted by us to the point of extinction. Now with this new discovery in greece it seems like this theory is out the window. Whats your hypothesis /sci/?
Africa doesn't have megafauna.

Go to the wikipedia page for megafauna. The first thing there is literally a picture of an african elephant

Tell us more about it.

The hominid predating the ones found in africa. Implies humans split from apes on the north east mediterranean rather than subsaharan africa as previously thought.

We've known for a while that hominids existed in Europe, but that doesn't imply that this is where our species evolved. After all, Homo Erectus were found in Asia of all places. As far as we understand, our species most likely evolved in Africa.

OK, then according to that wiki there are tons of extant megafauna on every continent.

A few things to note. This specimen was discovered in the 1940's, so it's not a new discovery. More importantly, this doesn't imply that modern humans came from anywhere other than Africa, it just raises the question of whether hominids did. But the disappearance of much megafauna is linked to the apparition of modern humans, not of hominids. After all, many hominids didn't even eat meat.

Link to a shitty pop sci type article about the theory im talking about.

I think 7 mya is long before both either modern humans, neanderthals or the extinction of the megafauna
It's the appearance of modern humans and their spread from Africa at a much later date to which extinction of many large mammals is attributed.

They went extinct because the plant selection in Africa went to shit around the early Pliocene era meaning they had to make due with crap plant life to eat that couldnt fuel their large bodies so they fucking died.

That could still be the case.
If this greek hominid migrated into africa later on, african animals may have had millions of years living around humans to adapt.
This is of course assuming that this new european hominid does turn out to be a human ancestor.

i'm sorry but that sounds fucking retarded, people don't actually believe this do they?
