Obviously the lines are following a symmetrical fractal of the larger body because the ferromagnetic material just happened to fall over those electromagnetic lines. You thought they were assembling into a pattern because there was some special meaning or something? Don't be so vain.

As for why the electromagnetic force follows a linear orientation, this is purely hypothetical but probably because being 3-Dimensional would require a monopole to exist to keep the poles from crossing. Keep in mind that at their core everything is a magnet and must repel because two things attracted to another will try to rotate to match each other. That's my theory anyways.

If you were to visualize it in real 3D it would look more like fog that has denser shells inbetween which is less fog. On the ends the shells of fog would dissipate and not be fully formed.
