Hawaii got extremely lucky from how bad it could have been. French Polynesia got hit too, but no deaths since they are all really well protected from that sort of thing and the waves were a paltry 3m at best.

Its really only for houses/buildings with basements. Opening a window or allowing outside air into your HVAC system is all you need to do to get rid of it. Houses with vented crawl spaces don't have problems. However, it is still a legit concern in some areas more than others and with some styles of houses.
