Paper still has a Z axis. It is a thin Z axis but, it still exists. For paper to be 2 dimensional that would imply if you rotated it 90 degrees on it's X or Y axis it would be literally impossible to see. You can still see paper when you do this, but it's just really thin, not invisible.
