Can I read this as an absolute beginner? And, if so, what can I expect to get from it?
The only training in math I have is:
- Some very raw foundations in linear algebra
- Read several chapters of Stewart calculus from differentiation to integration and some of its applications
- Some intro to discrete math after reading part of ''How to Prove it''

yes you can, its a good book and you can find it for free online with torrents or just typing in algebra artin pdf, then read lang algebra

read Lang algebra? wait, so read another Algebra book after reading this Algebra bible by Artin?
Whats the difference between the two?

try doing Axler or something first so you get comfortable with proving things in a less difficult setting

what, are you really asking this question. do you think a book called geometry has a total offering of modern geometry in it, Artin is a 500 page undergraduate text, Lang is a 1000 page springer yellowback for graduate students

algebra by serge lang is regarded by some as the best graduate level algebra text. just worry about artin which is for undergraduates and i quite enjoyed reading it, you can find it online for free with a bit of searching. also lang's book is close to 1000 pages and then there's commutative algebra books which run around 700-800 pages like the book by eisenbud that you read if you want to learn algebraic geometry. there's a lot of algebra man

It's actually a horribly written book with way too many mistakes and terribly presented arguments.
However, it's a good book to teach out if you have a prof who works to make it a bit more intelligible, since it has a great selection of topics, and approaches them (correctly so) from a higher level perspective. The thinly veiled agenda is of course Number theory but I hardly consider that a weakness.
What are your guys' opinions on Jacobson's basic algebra 2 as a second book? I have already read Maclane and Birkhoff's Algebra (Not their survey)

His style is unbearably wordy. It's good if you can get past that.

I'm pretty wordy when I write myself, so it might suit me. Thanks
