Because the term "american" is being skewed with your second word or term.

It can't tell the difference between "African american" and "american (anything else)" because it tries to draw similarities to the word "american" and thinks they're more relevant than other descriptors

You don't really know what an "American" looks like so it draws from pictures that use descriptors that would be used to describe it which is why African Americans show up before some other things.

If you just typed in "scientist" or "mathematician" you'd get more white people because you don't refer to white people as "American white people" or what ever it's not how it's commonly referred to
