Why does America place so much emphasis on STEM and trades when the professions are so much more profitable (and apply scientific principles)? Doctors and dentists make more than engineers, math graduates, or HVAC technicians

Because (one point) knowledge (STEM knowledge) is power. Give me a modern tank, send me back to ancient roman empire and I will become empereor. Or give me a strong AI today, that follows my orders and tomorrow you will fall down to your knees before me.

>tank runs out of gasoline

I find this very hard to believe. The tank would be hard to service with no industry to back it up. The Romans aren't idiots, they'd realize that it's essentially just a more advanced form of their siege engines and not magic.

Why would I want a doctor's salary when everything I enjoy is cheap and I don't want kids?

It's not about money that's why.
Countries place emphasis on STEM and research so they can be leaders in said field of research for 1) superiority over rival countries 2) defense 3) bragging rights 4) marketing so the world's best students flood their PhD programs

business and medical-related degrees ARE more popular than science and engineering degrees. do 5 minutes of research please
You still generally need a stem degree to get into medschool, pharmacy school, dentistry school, etc. and chances are you will drop out anyways.
Most doctors aren't entrepeneurs, at least compared to engineers. They make a lot of money, but they'll always work for someone. That's why yoy've never heard of a billionaire doctor.

Amount of school, becoming a doctor takes a lot more time than becoming an engineer.
