Is there an area of knowledge and research about politics/ social life/ how people think? I mean down to nitty gritty mathematical concepts in the same sense as something like economics attempts to do. Basically away to understand our world in a fairly rational way.

Well there are branches of sociolinguistics, but you are right. I mentioned linguistics because one of the categories asked about is 'how people think'. Linguistics, at least in the generative tradition, is one of the more mathematically rich models of a cognitive faculty.
