>get accepted into top 10 uni in the world for PhD in physics
>happiness is slowly replaced by realization that I will be paid minimum wage for the next 4 years despite working like a slave
>regret that I didn't apply for managment consulting internships and banking jobs
this was my dream
how do I become happy with what I have?

those jobs would suck too, in different ways

this is what you get for being an immature troglodyte who doesn't understand that accumulating money and having financial stability is the main goal in life
>inb4 philosophical bullshit about soul, dignity, happiness, etc
having enough money lets you live life the way you want it, that's all the information you need to know in order to conclude that money is the primary goal

>having enough money lets you live life the way you want it
oh anon, that's not how it works
>>8772661
At least you can still shitpost on /sci/ about Chad the engineer who makes $250,000 a year and enjoys his job.

oh anon, stop being so pedantic
you want me to construct a mathematical argument? is it that hard for you to apply your imagination and figure this shit out?
having more money increases your chances of having a happier life, the more money you have, the closer you get, but since there could be so many unforeseen negative events happening in reality you can only asymptotically reach an optimal, perfect amount (if you can call it that) of happiness
happy?
>>8772699
that's the most autistic shit I've ever read

You're going to spend most of your waking life at work, unless you become remarkably wealthy. It's far more important to have a job that suits you than a grueling job that pays exceptionally well. It doesn't matter how much nice stuff you have at home if you spend 9 hours a day at an office suffering at your desk.

there have been studies done that show that happiness per dollar hits really hard diminishing returns at around 80k$ a year.

>Live in free or subsidized university housing
>Have free healthcare given to you by your university
>Have university cafeterias that charge students almost nothing for a good meal
>Be given an allowance even though with all the previously cited facts, you could live literally penniless
And you are complaining because...?

This is why I dropped out of graduate school and went to med school
U jelly?
>>8772661
opposite here man
went engineering, figured fuck grad school ive been in school for the past 16 years of my life
ended up doing research in microfluidics, really enjoyed the opportunity to solve new open ended problems
tfw you realize you want to go to grad school as a junior but you never planned for it and opted to have fun rather than grades for the past 3 years
tfw i'm going to graduate and make a nice salary, but doing shit work and essentially padding the pockets of the company rather than myself
desu if you were going physics you were probably never the social butterfly that it takes to be a real success in industry. maybe you'd have a nice low six fig salary but for math, science, and engineers, pay raises max out around there unless you start doing management
I envy you
but I suppose the grass is always greener
