What's the word on Prozac and SSRIs in general affecting cognition? We've heard creative types say that Prozac mutes their creativity, but what about problem solving and abstract thinking?
I can't find much on it, except that Prozac improved cognition of depressed persons. Obviously this makes sense, when you're depressed, you can't think straight.
Please do NOT make this a thread about depression or mental illness. I'm specifically looking for literature and anecdotes on SSRIs and cognition/problem solving. For example, would a person on Prozac have more or less difficulty understanding and internalizing abstract mathematical concepts?

Same. I take it for anxiety and it helps me actually focus on the task at hand.

I had a bad trip on ecstasy. I don't trust drugs that elevate serotonin levels. I tried a few antidepressants and they had too many side effects. These drugs were only created a few decades ago.

Don't use prozac. Take it from someone who was on it, it really does cause erectile dysfunction. I was unable to get aroused / get erect, or it was incredibly difficult to attain an erection when I was taking it.

SSRI's never did anything for me.
Currently I take mirtazapine and my abstract thinking is definitely enhanced because I sleep better and am more motivated because I feel better enough to function.

There is a huge difference between a drug that dumps all your serotonin at once and one that simply blocks some receptors so your levels are slightly elevated. It's not like rolling balls, if you aren't depressed/ anxious/ ocd you won't feel anything.

What was your dose? I've taken 10mg Prozac for a while and while my libido is depressed, I can still get a boner

Prozac made me unable to think or make decisions on my own. I felt increasingly retarded while on it to the point that I didn't feel safe to drive. my judgement was gone. I also couldn't concentrate for shit and my libido totally disappeared. I didn't want to die anymore but I didn't want anything else either, not even things I needed to live. I slept a lot and spaced out most of the day, couldn't accomplish anything at all. nothing had meaning. while I was first coming up on my dose, it felt like my brain was being torn in half. not physically painful but it didn't feel right. my doctor said to give it time and it only got way worse. took me like 6-8 weeks to get back to normal once I cold turkey'd that garbage
I personally wouldn't recommend prozac for anything. ymmv
