Just speaking for me, I try not to assume anything one way or the other, given the total lack of data. I would not be hugely surprised if we got some sort of proof of intelligent life, but I would also not be hugely surprised if we never find life of any sort not related to us.

Anything would be sufficient. The fact there has been absolutely nothing yet people have a very clear perception of what Aliens are, what they look like, what their ships look like, that there has been a rich history and myth and fantasy created about them, shows you that Aliens just like Dragons, Elves and Demons are alive only in the imagination of people.

The universe is barren, as we would expect it to be, since we are looking at a 100 year slice of a 13 billion year old movie reel. You would expect alien civilizations to last between thousands of years to millions of years, we're just looking for them at the wrong time, maybe a few million years too early or too late for another one, maybe the last one in this galaxy died out 50,000 years ago and there just wasn't anyone on Earth looking up through a telescope.

As one who has researched the field and crap associated with it:
people want government/total media disclosure. They wouldn't listen to anything else unless they personally interacted with aliens themselves.
