What do you think was its intended role? To attempt to rationalise? Parody empiricism? I think Descartes' work is really just a "take what you like I don't give a fuck" philosophy, and not everyone is going to find "cogito ergo sum" to be useful in their own outlooks of life, unironically what >>8711441 said.
If you actually read meditations you will quickly see that most of his writing was just trying to appease the clergy that he was terrified of. I mean some of his defenses of God and "humility" made me feel like he was terrified of being executed by the church.
I can't tell what I am supposed to take seriously and what he added to appease his contemporaries.
