Is there any logic at all behind why mathematicians decided that the absolute value of x-2 should be negative if x < 2?
It makes no sense since absolute is supposed to make the x value positive
u wot m8
Are you drunk?
the x is gettin negativ but the y is still positive and thats what its all about! x=x ,but y=lx-2l ...
fart so hard

But x can't get negative in an absolute function

|(-2)| = 2
x = -2
y = 2
retard

Disregard the symbols and only hone in on the number when finding coords.

Unless you're joking: calculate first, then take result as "distance from zero." Absolute function always returns a positive.
Perhaps you're giving way too much "sensibility" to mathematicians, society and to most people.
Start with "Why zero?" So someone could say "You don't have any food: However, if you do 'this' for me I'll give you some of mine." And they say it "after" they took food that wasn't theirs.

lol i totally forgot that the result is an y coordinate. I think i have to sleep now, been reading calculus for 10h today

Did you really create this shitpile of a thread just to brag for how many hours a day you debrainletize yourself?

glad2help, fellow brainlet :^)

i just come on /sci/ whenever I feel like a brainlet and i don't feel like a brainlet anymore thx anon

It is equivalent to magnitude in physics. Magnitude being the value of something without the direction. For example, if you're driving 20 mph, it's a magnitude because you don't know what direction you're going (forwards or reverse).
Why it has a different name in math I don't know.
