My professor used to play poker because she knows a lot about statistics. She's good.

because there's a big time investment in order to get good enough and play enough to make serious money and there is no guarantee that you will be good enough to be profitable enough that it can be a successful full time career.
and you'd need to be really good and make a lot of money for it to be worth while

The combinatorics of poker is fascinating, but in practice, no one can make the necessary computations in real time to figure out all the relevant conditional probabilities that would help you. Understanding it definitely helps, but psychological warfare is far more important when actually playing.
