>products of oil combustion are water and CO2
What's stopping us from just gathering water and CO2 and transforming those in oil in some sort of reverse chemical reaction?

You spend energy doing it.
>>
>>8547685

It's been possible since forever but the oil companies suppress it

Nothing in principle, but it's a hard problem.
>>
Explain to me how you would turn CO2 gas into a solid.

It would be more expensive in the end than simply not burning the oil in the first place
>>

It's easy, just plant lot's of trees and wait.

If you're going to do that, you may as well just not burn the oil in the fist place.

No. Look up Fischer - Tropsch. It has been known for over 70 years.

There is only one problem and >>8547696 got it. There are however 2 applications where it can be useful:
- synthesized on aircraft carriers using nuclear power to supply fighters with synthetic fuel, effectively an energy carrier
- synthesized near very large wind - or solar farms, in order to soak up electricity produced in excess of what the market or the grid can handle. In such scenarios negative prices have been seen.
>>
You would have to put energy into the reaction and it would cost more than the energy of burning the oil initially so would be a right old waste of time

This. If you consider burning methane:

CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O

Following are heats of formation:
Methane -- -75 kJ/mol
Water -- -286 kJ/mol
Carbon Dioxide -- 394 kJ/mol
Oxygen -- 0 kJ/mol (defined)

So that reaction is exothermic by over 500 kJ/mol. No matter what kind of catalyst you can design, you can't beat thermodynamics: you're putting energy in to get energy out and that's even more wasteful.
