Really, its because we do know what problems needing to be solved, the maths just uses the process of elimination. Sometimes along the way, new things are discovered and the process branches out in new directions. Its like a old fashioned mine. Dig when you see good rock, follow the veins and hope theres a good deposit along the way. The deeper it goes, the harder the work gets.
